Nice draft for us

I doubt Baltimore would pass on Burfict though. Seems like the kind of player Baltimore would take a risk on

Not too bad!

A couple things of particular note to me:

Love the spot for Kirk Cousins – Miami needs some class and when Matt Moore collapses he gets to start :)

I can’t see Kirkpatrick that high after his marijuana issues, especially in Tampa, who needs to get some high-character guys in that locker room.

I don’t know about Richardson going to Seattle.

Great picks for the Steelers, though I think I’d rather see Tank Carder in the third than Senio Kelemete… not a big deal though. Getting Adams in the first and Ta’Amu in the second would be great.

Nice Draft

there is no way in the world the Panthers would take Burfict.

I love the Steelers.

So the new OC gets

Mike Adams LT
Gilbert LG
Pouncey C
Senio Kelemente RG
Colon RT

With:
Legs, Foster, and Starks as backups.

I like him already.

You can't like the OC

You have to hate him no matter what

to me

this is an ideal year to some how some way move up for multiple picks in the upper 3 rounds… specifically the second… Id be willing to trade off next yrs 2nd for another this yr, as I would love to get a few guys a few spots up from our drafting position in the sec round this yr to make a diff selection in the first, thus adding a quailty ILB, OG, and DT-NT a notch above what will be available….

by OR69faithfull on Feb 2, 2012 3:37 PM EST reply actions

Burfit, Osemelle, and Poe...

give me those three this yr, and i dont care about rounds 4-7 of 2nd round next yr…

Not sure about a tackle in the first round

But im not too familiar with Adams. Would he be able to play guard also? Though I am open to a LT provided we move Colon to guard. I think Gilbert played well enough at RT to keep him at that spot unless we think he can play on the left side.

Also this year I think we may end up taking a linebacker in the first two rounds. At worst I think we will pick one up in the third. The FO seems to value the position a lot and we could use some guys on the inside and an outside linebacker wouldnt surprise me either. I dont think anyone wants to see Timmons on the outside ever again.

I don't think Adams makes it to 24

There is speculation his workouts will push him ahead of Martin as 3rd best OT.

Adams has the size and athleticism to be a LT

It’d be a waste to put him at G. His big knocks are his inconsistency and lacking of football smarts.

Potential starting LTs always go higher than expected, so I doubt we have a shot at him.

I'd rather have Jonathan Martin

Better pass blocker and more athletic than Adams.

I haven’t watched anything because he’s projected as a top 10-15. We’ve got no chance

Thats a lie sir

Martin is more polished in both areas of the game but he is not a better athlete that Mike Adams. Martin right now just knows how to use his hands and keep his balance better. To me Martin will be an above average LT or a really good RT.

Just for posterity

Where would you put Martin if the Steelers got him and kept Gilbert at one of the tackle spots?

by Michael Uhlhorn on Feb 3, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Show me

I haven’t seen much with Adams to believe that he is as good as you say. He is more of a lumberer, and those types dont usually excel at LT in the NFL. Martin is much more smooth in his lateral movement and his feet are a lot better than Adams’. Martin shows the ability to beat the speed rush and step up to defend the inside move, both of which Adams kinda struggles with.

I’d prefer Martin at this point.

If I had to start a game right now I would want Martin as well. I said Adams was a better athlete. Martin is much more polished. He does a better job at keeping his balance which Adams had problems with and Martin uses his hands much better. This translated to better play. However I think Martin is an average athlete. I won’t be able to quantitatively prove this till the combine when I watch them move in space.

What I am saying is Adams has a higher ceiling then the already polished Martin. I will try to look for the Senior Bowl tape cause I only DVR it and can transfer it to online.

This is Ohio State v. Florida in 2011 Mike Adams never gets beat to the outside. However because of balance issue can get beat to the inside.

This is a Jonathan Martin breakdown video against Oregon, ASU and VT. It is from 2010 but he does get beat to the out side numerous times. However doesn’t get beat in general more than Adams.

Here is one of Adams in 2010

http://youtu.be/Xx6k8TkQypk

He has quick feet he just doesn’t always keep them moving and will instead stop them and lean. However in this he did a good job on JJ Watt and Adrian Clayborne.

Adams isn't a bad player

I just dont think he is as good as Martin, or will be in the future. Adams’ just looks very stiff in his lower body to me, whereas Martin is smaller, more agile, and can probably handle putting on a little more weight to get stronger.

I posted a link above to Martin’s game against Notre Dame last season and he looked very good.

I see

I guess we could trade up to get him but if we trade up I would rather it be for a guard or linebacker. I guess what we do will really depend on how the coaches feel about Gilberts ability to play on the left side.

by steelerintexas on Feb 3, 2012 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure how the coaches see it

But I don’t think Gilbert is athletic enough to be a good LT.

Ive always doubted his ability to be good long term at LT

But others seem to be optimistic about the idea. Problem is when you have as much success as the Steelers have its hard to find a good LT since they are all gone by the time we pick.

by steelerintexas on Feb 3, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

I tend to agree with this

But I thought Gilbert was a terrible selection to begin with, so I am not going to underestimate him again.

I think if Gilbert did move to the left side, he would be very much like Max Starks (as in he would be above average, but never great). I think Gilbert can be a top-5 to 10 RT in the game though if he progresses a little more.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Feb 3, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Don't really like going with offensive tackle in 1st round

I think Pittsburgh has to go with a guard in the 1st round, and then a NT or ILB in the 2nd and third depending on BPA at that position in those respective rounds. And this is also a year that Pitt should really consider moving around in the draft. If they could make moves in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd round, even if it means having no picks past the 3rd round and/or giving up picks in next years draft I think the front office should consider it. This team is 2 or 3 good quality players to fill the big holes in the team away from getting back to the superbowl and winning.
Wide receivers are set, QB is set, cornerbacks are set, safeties are good for at least another year or two, defensive ends are set, TEs are set, offensive tackles are good enough, center is great, running backs are good enough. A really good guard, good NT, and younger faster ILB that can cover would make this team a superbowl team IMO.

by blitzzburgh on Feb 2, 2012 4:48 PM EST reply actions

Good for Baltimore

Might consider Brian Quick or Matt Reynolds in the 3rd, but Taylor is good. Would love to get Bernard Pierce in the 5th round if he really did fall that far (which I do not see happening)

Hightower and Brewster are fine by me though, but Burfict might be perfect!

Since I did this on mine

Starks ACL injury UFA
Scott due will be cut to save $2.2 million
That leaves the Steelers with Gilbert and Colon and literally no backups. The draft is weak at OT so taking one early may be the best shot to get someone who can contribute if needed.

Really?

I wouldn’t be upset. Colon is injury prone. Starks will probably get fat again and he’s still bad against speed rushes. And Gilbert doesn’t look like an NFL LT to me. After that, I don’t like anyone we have.

depends on how Starks and Colon are progressing in their rehab

if they’re not doing well, then its a good pick. but if either one of them can come back and contribute then we have too much of a backlog at OT with not enough room for everyone to start. I dont like the idea of moving either Gilbert or Colon inside, they’re both tackles and could be a great tandem if Gilbert can develop into a good LT.

Wouldn't at all be unhappy

I don’t think Adams makes it that far though. He is going to shoot up boards and be over-drafted after workouts.

Love rounds 2 & 3. I agree with the positional need of ILB, but I don’t know if drafting a 4th-rounder there gives more value than later in the draft, unless of course you are talking BPA.

I want to see a K, FB, G, NT for sure in this draft with the rest of the picks filling out OT, WR, TE, DE, S.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Feb 2, 2012 5:23 PM EST reply actions

Could Adams fall to 24?

Adams had a strong senior bowl and many boards have him climbing. I would like to have him fall to the Steelers. I cannot see Kendall Wright falling all the way to 30th. With a greater emphasis on speed and not needing to worry about being hit over the middle his value is much higher. I could see Houston, NE, Clev all taking him and Phila trading up to get him before 30. Many mocks I have seen have Jeffrey WR much lower and Still and Brockers much higher.
I see the Steelers going TE or tall WR in the first 5 rounds, why? With the Pats in the superbowl they keep showing how Gronkowski was the guy who propelled their redzone offense, an area the Steelers need a huge improvement in.
I don’t know if Marve has the size the Steelers need at ILB or if he is that much of an improvement over Sly. Broyles is not a bad player I just don’t know where he fits in a loaded WR corp.
If the players fall as you have them I would like to have;
1) Adams OT this is a no brainer- BPA and can help the team
2)Orson Charles TE- replaces Johnson at H-back and provide offensive boost a la Aaron Hernandez could take huge advantage of the defenseless receiver rule
3) Chapman NT- best floor at the position because he has played NT in college, stronger than Ngata coming out of college. Wow! Impressive toughness!
4) Leonard Johnson CB – there is not way I think he falls this low but if there you have to take him
5) Chris Rainey RB- takes over KR/PR from Brown allowing him to concentrate on WR and have less risk of injury. Provides mismatches at WR or RB and helps defensively on ST, blocked 6 punts in college, unlike Stephon Logan.

My draft has the Steelers adding offensive weapons to improve scoring. With today’s rules you can stop the run to make a team one dimensional or put up enough points to force them to pass.
I don’t have a ILB in my top 5, this means Foote can come back at less money and Sly can still improve. If Adams is taken I would take Hightower, because of his ability to immediately help the Steelers, and have an entirely different draft.

by Mike Liv on Feb 2, 2012 5:25 PM EST reply actions

No way we get a TE

Weslye Saunders is planned for being used in that role. Which is a precarious statement at best because we don’t use the TEs we do have effectively, why draft another? We have talent at the position its just under-utilized.

I love the Steelers.

by tannofsteel84 on Feb 3, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

I should have elaborated.

Saunders might be being used for a big target in the middle of the field but his 6’5 frame is too tall to be an H-back. He also does not have mismatch speed, something Charles brings to the table. Heath Miller signed a six year contract in 2009 at 35.3 million with a 12.5 signing bonus. At the time it was a decent offer, unfortunately the contact was backloaded and the salary cap has not increased as expected. He is set to make about 7 mil this season followed by 8 and 9. He will not be released this season because the signing bonus penalty would be huge. Next season the team would save 4.25 million if he is released after June 30. Miller has exceptional hands but he has been injured a few times in the last few seasons, and he might be starting to slow a bit. I love Heath having met him his rookie season, I have two of his jerseys and feel he is the embodiment of a Steeler. The league has changed and so must the Steelers. Considering they interviewed Luke Stocker, lance Kendricks and DJ Williams at the combine last year I would say they are looking for a TE with some speed.

by Mike Liv on Feb 3, 2012 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Charles and Saunders

run the same 40 time from my understanding. Saunders is not a slow TE, just don’t see it homie.

I love the Steelers.

by tannofsteel84 on Feb 3, 2012 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

The 4.81 might be a pro day

I am finding 4.96 for his combine. The only player I could find who is 6’5" and 260+ who can run 4.6 or less is Jimmy Graham. Even Pierre Paul ran a 4.71. The only TE who hit that speed are much lighter, around 250 or less. Saunders is more of a replacement for Miller rather than an H-back. Stocker, Kendricks, and Williams all ran sub 4.7 last year. Saunders has good speed not great.

by Mike Liv on Feb 3, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Saunders was ineligible for the combine and draft.

Colon or Gilbert move to guard

As SNW pointed out it would probably be Gilbert moving to LG. I cannot see having more than two new OL players going into a season. Also the Steelers have only drafted two OL in the top 5 rds once in the last 10 years. That was in 2010 when they took Chris Scott in the 5th when they had 3 fifth rd picks. That last time before that was 1998. Much of last seasons OL problems can be contributed to injury. While there is no doubt the starting OL could use improvement, you can’t go crazy trying to throw bodies at the problem. If that was the case we would be drafting a QB in the first rd after Ben’s injuries. Pouncey has had to watch the season end the last two seasons while injured, I think he will be playing with alot of fire.
Our scoring offense was down because a lack of turnovers and avg red zone scoring. A TE who creates mismatches will help greatly in the read zone. We also have to find a replacement for Antonio Brown on special teams if he is going to be a starter.

by Mike Liv on Feb 3, 2012 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Also the Steelers have only drafted two OL in the top 5 rds once in the last 10 years.

What? Maurkice Pouncey. Marcus Gilbert. Chris Scott. Kraig Urbik. Tony Hills. Cameron Stephenson. Willie Colon. Trai Essex. Max Starks. Kendall Simmons. All of those guys were taken in the first 5 rounds by the Steelers in the last 10 years.

Much of last years OL problems were also contributed to the fact that we do not have a legit NFL guard anywhere on the roster. Legs is too small. Kemo is wildly inconsistent and a horrible pass blocker. Foster has a low ceiling and isn’t great in run blocking. Trai Essex isn’t much anywhere. And Gilbert is seen as the long term answer at one of the T positions, not G.

I’m not trying to “throw bodies” at a problem. I am trying to put talent where we have none. It was clear to me that a lot of times our offense pittered out because teams would get such an incredible push up the middle (see Suggs almost decapitating Ben several times up the middle).

We have a TE who has a really high ceiling in Saunders. Why are you trying to throw bodies at that position instead of giving him a chance?

Oh

Now I see, that was worded oddly. In that case, that’s kind of irrelevant. I don’t think they’ve ever been in as bad of position with OL as they are now. In the early 2000s they had a great line and they didn’t need to spend high picks there. Since Faneca left, things have gotten a lot worse.

I agree about Faneca leaving

The line has been address lately. Pouncey is a two time pro bower. I find it difficult to judge the line because they seldom were healthy at one time. I would say the line is getting better.

by Mike Liv on Feb 3, 2012 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Thats a false staement

2001 they took a tackle in round four and a center in round five
1998 they took guard in the first and tackle in third

When was the last time we had multiple holes on the O-line
See we had Hartings an d Faneca, then needed an OT and drafted Smith, then needed a guard and drafted Simmons, then needed a RT and drafted Starks, then needed another RT ( Starks went to LT) and drafted Colon. It wasn’t till the 2008 that are line had major holes in it.

What is a false statement?

The 10 years? 2012-2001=11
Or that I missed marking the 2001 when I said 1998, sorry for the gaff, I was not paying much atttention past 10 years.
If Adams is drafted @24, then Gilbert or Colon moves to guard. Two problems solved. That leaves one weak guard position and I believe the Steelers would rather have chemistry over adding 3 players at new positons.

by Mike Liv on Feb 3, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Also keep in mind...

I would be passing on a guard to take Leonard Johnson who Mike Mayock has as his 4th corner and most boards have going in the second rd. Brooks has moved up to a 3rd round pick so if available in the 4th I would take him after Johnson. Do you feel better.

by Mike Liv on Feb 3, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

A trade down with the Eagles?

The Eagles are in a strange positon they have a ton of picks and few big needs. What they need is quality not quantity. A receiver to replace Jackson and a LB who can step in and make an immediate impact are needed. You might only find these in the first round. So the Eagles trade their 46,51 and 114 for the Steelers 24 and 88. The Steelers will have to make some tough cuts and additional pick gives a decent player at a low cost.

Josh Chapman had ACL surgery on the January 21st so his stock will drop far

If Hightower is available at#24

We take him over any available lineman. Hightower will have a higher draft grade (7.0) than most available lineman to fit our scheme. I would actually prefer Ta’amu in rd 2 over Poe in the first… I know nothing about his play ability, and scout reports are vague at best. Kelemete may not last to our pick in rd3 but would be a find there.

Overall though, if we landed these picks you have I would be a very happy camper

OLineman never a sure bet..

Admittingly, I am not a mock draft guru, and I never really have time to watch alot of College ball due to working, but taking TWO OLineman with so many other needs would be very dangerous picks. For one, there just hasn’t been a team in the NFL who has picked 2 OL stars unless both in the 1st round, and two.. the Olineman rely on building chemistry which would really put next season in jeopardy with so many new faces. I’d prefer them to pick 1 Olineman and pick depth(future starters) on the D-Line.

Again, I speak positionally due to my lack of knowledge with college player info.
