2012 Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament: Sweet 16 Round (taking this seriously now)

UPDATE: BTSC has advanced over The "Mc" Effect, 933-560! Props to Jon Anderson for making this round really interesting there for a bit with his ingenuity, and big thanks to everyone for coming through with the incredible support for us! Our quarterfinal matchup against Pittsburgh Sports & Mini Ponies (PSAMP) starts on Monday and we hope you'll be back to support us then!

Enough with the fanshot, this is getting an actual post now.

Around 1:30 pm, I realized that the second round of the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament was underway, and put a fanshot on the front page. Much to my (perhaps, our) chagrin, BTSC was getting its ass kicked 102-36 by The "Mc" Effect.

The score progressed more or less as follows from that time:

Star-divide

2:20 pm - BTSC leads 119-111

3:00 pm - The "Mc" Effect leads 157-153

5:40 pm - BTSC leads 323-177

7:00 pm - BTSC leads 341-311

As of posting right now at 8:15 pm, the score is 393-357 with The "Mc" Effect back in the lead.

The "Mc" Effect is a Pittsburgh Pirates blog run by one Jon Anderson, who appears to be a junior at Waynesburg University and is studying Computer Science and Communications. He appears to run the blog by himself, and he's a very resourceful young man: some time after 5:40, Anderson made it a ball game again by getting his fellow Waynesburg students involved and tweeting about it.

I have nothing against Anderson - I just don't want to lose to him.

I have nothing against his one-man outfit (his resourcefulness is impressive) - I just don't want the best Steelers blog around, equipped with a healthy roster of contributors, to lose to it.

I have nothing against the Pirates (a team that I nominally root for given their streak of 19 straight losing seasons) - I just don't want it to seem like the Steelers (with all of their success and deserved accolades) do not have what it takes to get past them, let alone the Tim Tebow show.

I know there is a passionate group of users that actively posts/comments on this site. I know there is also a sizable population that may not actively comment, but who are still loyal and appreciated readers.

To each and every one of you that reads this - please help us win.

Voting ends in just under 25 hours - 9:00 pm eastern time tomorrow (Thursday). It's enough time for us to come back (again) and win this thing, but it's going to take effort because The "Mc" Effect isn't going to sleep during that time either.

Vote from every computer/mobile device you have. It's the first one on the list - you don't have to scroll very far to find it and you don't have to bother yourself with voting for any other matchups if you don't want to.

Spread the word. As PaVaSteeler commented to the earlier fanshot:

don’t leave any chads hanging…tell your friends, tell your family, pay your office workers…but get out the vote!

I'm not advocating the use of underhanded tactics to cheat and game the poll - we have everything we need to win this fair and square.

If you don't feel like voting/helping us out, then let us know what we can do to improve as a site and change your mind.

To each and every one of you that reads this - please help us win.

(And please throw in a rec or two so this stays at the top of the fanpost column through tomorrow everning, even if it does get pushed down the front page.)

Working your ass off to keep up with us? You're working your ass off and beating us.

That’s a testament to your resourcefulness – seriously, kudos – just as much as it is to the number of our readers that have not voted. It’s a plenty fair fight if they all stay on the sideline.

I’ll personally accept a free shirt if you’re willing to give one, but you’d probably need to offer free cap space to properly convince us to drop out (not that you’d need to bother the way our votes have slowed to an absolute crawl the past few hours).

Is it weird that when I discovered the dividends of your twitter surge...

I immediately saw Larry Fitzgerald streaking 64 yards for a TD (don’t mind the Spanish, I just think everything sounds better when it’s called in another language)?

I don’t think it would be prudent to accept congratulations until the poll has actually closed, but the sentiment is certainly appreciated. And if you do pull this out in the end, then congratulations to you because you’ll have absolutely earned it.

With what you’ve been able to put together, I think your “measly self-run blog” could easily be a top seed next year – you produce good content and you’ll only get better as a blogger, while your social network is only going to grow. Being a part of a larger network is certainly a benefit to our cause, but that really doesn’t matter if we’re not effectively leveraging our assets (Pensburgh is SBN’s Penguins blog and was a 2-seed in the tournament, but they got bounced in the first round). You have as good a shot as anyone at winning a future iteration of this contest.

Good luck with whatever you do man, I’ve got nothing but respect for you. And for what it’s worth – I’d have been pulling for you against anyone else, just like I’d have been pulling for the Cardinals if they were up against anyone else in Super Bowl XLIII.

This stuff must really affect you. Talk about losing it or not leaving well enough alone.

Pompous? Maybe. But you are just as guilty if not more so. Almost every comment you make is self absorbed. You really think highly of yourself with your inaccurate metaphors and analogies. Especially when you act like the daddy for everybody. Your ‘position’ has gone to your head. And you accuse me of knee jerk reactions and flying off the handle? Hilarious. Just look at your response here. Perhaps it’s because I speak the truth, and you simply don’t like what you hear. As a counter you use the same tactics certain political parties use to create the atmosphere of antagonism, and make every attempt to embarrass, twist facts to suit you position, compartmentalize, create negative connotations/ associations, make wild assumptions about your opponent, and spread misinformation. Then come the insults. There is no meeting of the minds, only combativeness and extremism.

I’m not trying to save the world here. That’s preposterous. Like this is really the place to instigate change, but I will sure as hell present an opposing view when exaggerations and misinformation is spread by the likes of you, because allowing it is what caused the U.S. to be in debt, a deficit beyond reach for either us or our grandchildren, and a foreign policy that continues jingoism and hegemony. Nobody said anything then, and now we have reap the undesired benefits. So I respond with a resounding fuck you. You’re attitude of “shut up and stop with this liberalism” or “don’t exercise you freedom of speech because it offends my American sensibilities” is unproductive. If there were dialog and compromise, we wouldn’t be in this shithole in the first place. It’s a culture war where reason has lost in the last 10 years, and I’ll be damned if people like you try to squash and suppress it with inaccurate and illogical rhetoric. I’m a flag waving liberal just like you are a flag waving conservative capitalist. The difference is that this country is NOT okay, and conservative free market moral superiority is what caused it. You’ve made your position abundantly clear, but you just don’t like freedom of speech when it infringes on your view of the world. You don’t like me? Great. I don’t like you either, and what I really despise are people who ignore the facts because it gets in the way of their ideology. Go ahead and act like the patriotic defender of the lie that is the american ideal. You simply don’t like somebody speaking ill of your country, so you feel compelled to defend it.

Conspiracy laden? Dude, you must not read the news, or know anything about current events. It’s pretty much common knowledge that everything I’ve stated in regard to crony capitalism as the cause of this economic mess we are in is true, yet your ideology blinds you to the truth. You continue the republican talking points like it were reality. Frankly, it amazes me that you understand how how the NFL is run the same way and complain yet you won’t hear it for the society you live in.

The following is the most important part, though. There is a critical difference between partisan politics and social psychology, or the conflict between liberalism and conservatism and cultural phenomena. You really don’t care though, and have no understanding of subtly and nuance. You’ve grouped those together, and when I speak of this social psychology and its effects on our lives, you think it’s politics. I haven’t said anything about “politics” or made judgements about political parties and ideology in over a year, despite what you “think.”

I’m sure you will try to find contradictions and inaccuracies in my comment. Help yourself. I don’t give a shit about you, but I won’t let you or others bully those that want to express an opposing view. I simply try to explain that the way the NFL is run is just a reflection of our society. Those are my metaphors, not the mainstream left/right wing stereotypical thinking like you do.

by IronJake on Feb 24, 2012 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, if you can't see how the labels you apply to me...

…fit so well on yourself, there’s no point in even discussing this. You make so many assumptions that are as inaccurate as those you accused me of making of you (and you engage in the very act you called me out for in the beginning of this exchange).

Basic issue: you take umbrage at the metaphors and analogies I use, so you comment. As I’ve stated to you elsewhere (and you conveniently ignore to support your accusation of me as wanting to quash free speech), just as you have the right to disagree with me, so I have the right to disagree with you.

But IronJake, here’s the big difference: YOU immediately utilize an attack mode, use profanity, reduce any possible dialogue to accusations and name calling, make assumptions about those you are opposing (me in this case, but others as well) that you have NO basis to make, other than the words that you object to are on your list of “catch phrases of the enemy”; you have done this for this exchange, and the last time we crossed words. How do you not expect any type of similar response when you open up with that?

You preach “dialogue” and compromise, but you (first) denigrate those you disagree with, question their intelligence, insult them with profanity and then get upset when they retaliate?

You belittle those you believe don’t think like you, assuming and announcing they have no feelings for the injustices of the world, the plight of the poor, the jobless, the victims of man’s cruelty to man. You immediately pigeon hole those whose words you object to, then crow that their reaction proves your point.

I don’t question your sincerity, or your passion. I resent the fact that, while you no nothing about me, you feel qualified to demonize me based on words not even directed towards you.

I have no position here at BTSC, except that of a life long fan of Steeler Nation. You decry my “pomposity, self absorption, and acting like a daddy for everyone” while exercising your own self-appointed “protector of the weak” superhero role. I’m daddy to no one on here, but I am a citizen of BTSC, as are you, and as an equal citizen, I have the right to call out those who transgress the rules of this site. Unlike you however, I limit passing judgement to the actions others take on this site, and don’t presume to police their lives outside of this blog site.

Feel free to ignore anything I post in the future, or, if you feel compelled to react, be my guest. But be man enough to accept the response you elicit, in a grown up manner, and not throw profane tantrums because someone tweaks you to get a reaction.
