2012 NFL Scouting Combine: Linebackers and Defensive Linemen Take the Stage
The Combine continues plowing away (see what I did there?), and today's participants in the Underwear Olympics are the linebackers and the defensive linemen.
If the combination of offensive linemen and tight ends (Saturday) and the wide receivers and running backs (Sunday) was interesting, today will be downright riveting.
Lots of potential impact players will be identified today, and both figure to be priority positions for the Steelers in the upcoming draft.
We get to set our sights on a duo of inside/middle linebackers, Dont'a Hightower and Vontaze Burfict, as well as one hulking nose tackle from Memphis, Dontari Poe.
The Steelers are likely to speak with all three of these players, if they have not yet already done so. But more than anything, this is really the time to identify middle and later round picks.
You know the drill by now; if you see a guy you like, mention it in the comments, keep the discussion going. If there are some of interest to you, we've got our own Seton Hall and Steelers working to line up interviews to run in the very near future, so throw out some names, see if he can track them down.

Who will take him?
Serious question? I wouldn’t mind an quick analysis of 3-4 teams before us in the draft who need a NT. I would like to see what their other needs are and who they may take instead.

I think with the numbers he's posting today
some team with dreams of him being the next Ngata will snatch him up because they are going to place him higher on their boards. I could be wrong, but I’m a firm believer that football coaches necessarily have huge egos and believe they can “coach up” anyone, so long as he has the right amount of talent and potential. At his size, and with his considerable talent, he can play anywhere on the D-line.
I'm your huckleberry
It depends
The teams with 3-4 defences drafting ahead of us have greater needs at other positions. Poe is still so raw, some teams with a lot of raw d-line, like the Chargers, may not feel ready to start another project until some of their other projects have developed a bit more.

doesnt matter if its 3-4 or 4-3
he can play in either scheme, he has played both NT and DT, and with his athletic ability, going to be hard for teams to pass him up, especially when you use “BPA”.

in the minority here
when i watch poe plaqy, i just don’t see it. i guess that’s why i’m not a pro football scout. he doesn’t lose his one on one assignments, but he also doesn’t dominate them. for someone that big and strong, i would expect to see some serious ass-kicking.
i’m not feeling it. just say no to poe.

I disagree. I think he handles his 1on1s and doubles well. His problem is he loses technique and kind of gets sloppy while depending on his strength. Good coaching could turn him into an elite DT.

Agree.
We don’t really expect someone to walk in like Ngata at 27 years old. We should expect raw with upside and coachability as a 21/22 year old. Poe has the tools.

Which makes me wonder
what they are planning to do at the beginning of the season. Colbert was so definite that Hampton would be back, and said he will be on PUP early in the season. Presumably anybody they draft is going to see some playing time at the beginning of the season, ready or not, unless they think McLendon is ready to be the man full-time.

McLendon starting
I expect to see McClendon start with Hood doing a regular rotation through all the d-line positions unless we can get another vet to provide back-up. The alternative is Hood as NT with McLendon doing the rotation. I expect Heyward to nail down DE.
However it works out, we will need another 2 d-line. I expect we will draft one and either promote someone from PS or sign a FA if there is someone cheap enough.

you know he played QB right?
two entirely different positions. standing in a pocket throwing the ball, handing off, occassionally scrambling, which he didnt do well at all his last couple years. This doesnt exactly equate to chasing down RBs, trying to cover RB’s and TE’s in pass coverage, getting hammered on every down by 300 pound lineman, etc etc. Yea, I do know that we have seven picks.
Yea I know
it was a little tongue in cheek
either way, we can still get a LB even if we don’t take one in the first round was my point :)
I love the Steelers.
by tannofsteel84 on Feb 28, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions
yeah, I agree, my point is;
Farrior’s play has dropped dramatically the last couple of years, and people have to face the facts that he has to go, its inevitable. Yeah, Sylvester, rookie, etc are going to make mistakes, but that is the only way they are going to get better and progress. Farriors days of progressing are over. Sylvester made some mistakes and he was immediately taken out of the game and that was it. But, when Farrior continues to get toasted on pass down after pass down and his sideline to sideline pursuit has diminished and he misses tackes because of this, he doesnt get taken out of the game, only because he is a vet. But, in reality, the mistakes are the same with the two players and probably costs the team the same. Again, Sylvester, Rookie, etc has to be anaylzed over more than one game, if he continues game after game then something drastic has to be done.
I agree that Farrior time has come and gone
Just wish we had an extra pick in the top of the 2nd so we could get Zach Brown and be done with this.
I love the Steelers.

No on Poe
He played in conference USA and had only 18 tackles last year. With his body he should have dominated that level. Heck the penn state DT had like 17 TACLKES FOR LOSS. In big 10
Poe has bust written all over him in my eyes. Hope he goes early so we can get OG Glenn from GA
Because number of tackles is how you measure a NT’s skill, amirite?
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."
measure Ngata
107 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss, and 6.5 sacks total in the 2004 and 2005 seasons at Oregon.
by Steely McSmash on Feb 27, 2012 11:25 PM EST up reply actions
We’re not talking about Ngata, and I really don’t care what his stats were. My point was that you can’t measure a NT based on the number of tackles he gets.
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."
Yea

OK but...
Would you rather measure him on bench press, 40 time, etc?
The guy is either a playmaker or not. First round pick should be a playmaker in my opinion. Stats aren’t everything, but neither are physical gifts.
He should have stood out in that conference and he didn’t.
you don’t use stats to measure NTs, you use game tap.

We didn't ask him to cover and he was a 234 lb DE at WVU

"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."
False
West Virginia plays a 3-3-5 stack and Irvin was lined up as a DE. Also, he was by far their best pass rusher so asking him to cover from the DE spot would have been dumb. He seems to be capable of covering and looked very good in the drills

Looking good in drills and actually covering on the field are not the same thing. But let’s pretend for a minute that he actually can cover. That still doesn’t change the fact that he isn’t great against the run and is probably going to be a pass-rushing specialist only. With that being said, I wouldn’t touch Maybin 2.0 until the third, maybe fourth round.

I’m not really comparing him to Maybin, but if you disagree that he has a few Maybin-like qualities (not very strong or big, not great against the run, etc.) then you are insane. He is also basically limited to being a 3-4 OLB so that isn’t going to help his draft stock.
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."

I doubt anyone is going to draft a pass rushing specialist to play ILB. I was saying that he most likely won’t be able to play 4-3 DE and will most likely be drafted by a 3-4 team looking for an OLB.

He can’t play the run as well as an ideal 3-4 OLB should be able to and it remains to be seen how he handles coverage duties, so until then he should be classified as a pass rushing specialist. I’ll gladly admit I’m wrong if he turns into an all-around player in a few months, but I doubt he is there yet.
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."

Nothing wrong with being a 3rd/4th round pass rushing specialist. The guy already has close to elite speed and pass rushing skills he just needs to put in the time and work on the run game. Until then put him in on 3rd down and rush him off Harrison’s or Woodley’s edge and wreak havoc. Not to mention he would be amazing on special teams.

But what does his weight and athleticism have to do with playing the run? His weight helps, sure, but being big (or in his case average sized) doesn’t mean you can successfully play the run. I do like his speed and height (6’3 may not be big but it is big enough), though, and I think he could cover TEs and RBs with some success.
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."
Timmons looks good against the run because we don't ask him to take one blocks
Timmons is about 10 lbs lighter than Irvin is now, so that extra 10 lbs helps Irvin take on blocks and win.

Hasn't the ownership

Especially in first round
Why is everyone drafting potential and projects in round 1?
Because nobody coming out of college
is at the best he will be. Your not looking at prospects for what they can do now but what 2-3 years with our coaching will make him. Would you rather have the guy player A who can start right now but is near his ceiling as a player and will not get better or the guy player B who is right now only a little bit worse than A, but is really raw and has the ability to become and all-time great?
Best example would be would you rather have Jason Pierre Paul the raw prospect who played one season and had 6.5 sacks or Derrick Morgan with 19.5 sacks in 3 years?

How? Their jobs are completely different, so what do you measure with?
If you’re measuring tackles, Timmons last two years are only 6 off of Woodley’s career total.
Sacks? Woodley’s obviously got that (48-17) But as I mentioned, their jobs are different.
Is it INT’s? They’re equal there
FF’s? Timmons has one more.
Games missed. Woodley 10 Timmons 2
I am just curious as to how you feel Woodley outperformed Timmons. I love Woodley, he’s already became one of my favorite Steelers, and I’m not trying to put him down, I just can’t understand how either of them outperformed the other. To me that seems like when people want to compared Polamalu and Reed. Stacking them up against each other doesn’t make sense. I always hear that Timmons doesn’t make “splash plays”, so they say he’s under-performing. As I’ve said before, and I certainly hope this doesn’t happen, but if he were to ever miss time, you and the others would appreciate Timmons a little more.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music. But glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity.
The way I look at it, Woodley is one of the best at his position and there are few above him. Timmons, as much as I love him, has yet to really break out and become the elite ILB we’ve wanted for a while. I think he will next year but it really hasn’t happened yet. So I would agree that Woodley has outperformed Timmons.

Can you please explain what you wish to see in order for you to consider him to be. I’ve actually been wanting to ask this since the last time this topic came up.

I don't understand...
40 time means nothing to me for a NT. big snack clocked in with a 5.25….so what…he looked pretty damn quick off the ball and down the line for the last 9 years. Please some one agree!!!

For NTs the 10 yard split is what matters
And Poe’s was insanely good at 1.68. People are just wooing over his 40 because it is insane for someone his size.

Thank you
Everyone is saying these great things about his 40 time because it really is great, but it’s kind of irrelevant. I care WAY more about his ability to react to a ball being snapped, and his ability to explode in a short distance than anything else.
The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.
Perspectives become reality.
Twitter: @shanecglass
that is what a 10 yard split is...........
and the 40 measure’s his ten yard distances, and at 1.68 every ten yards is sick for a 348 pound guy. there are some other drills to measure his short distances, but I am sure he did above average.
Also, Brockers could possibly considered a 3-4 NT now at 322 pounds
I would not mind taking him at 24 to be a NT but I bet he goes top 15 as well

“that crap”? Like, as if it’s aimed personally at some person that as far as I’m concerned, doesn’t exist, as I know nothing about that person (or even Riddlah for that matter)?
I mean, fine, whatever you say, but I would think common sense would tell either of you two that “your mom” is a generic shadow in a case like this.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music. But glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity.
You didn’t aim it at him personally? You made a joke about HIS mom. I don’t see how that’s not personal. To me, and clearly him as well, it’s irrelevant that you don’t know him. Suggesting anyone’s mom prefers to be double teamed is immature, stupid, and inappropriate. That’s not the level of discourse we’d prefer here. Your mom jokes should be left for middle-school kids.

No, the “didn’t aim personally” is his mom, the nonexistent person in this situation.
If someone types “twss” do you really think there’s some “she” that said something? I’m pretty sure that it is assumed that there is no “she”. I would think that, what you correctly pointed out as a “middle school” joke, would be viewed the same way in any circumstance.
I think “suggesting” is a little extreme. I honestly can’t even imagine how you’d consider that “suggesting”. Also, it wasn’t “preferred to be” it was “strong enough to take on”
But, “suggesting” aside, is it immature, stupid…um yep, that’s the point, as is the “twss” thing.
Inappropriate? I guess it depends on the sensitivity level. And from someone who talks the way he does to others around here, I never would have taken him for the sensitive type. Especially about something as stupid and common as a dumb ‘your mom" joke, which, despite your upper middle class outlook on it, is NEVER personal.
Now, lets’ say his mom has 3 toes on one foot, weighs 900 lbs, burps and spits when she talks, and shoots heroin in to her eyeballs, and I made jokes about any of that, that is personal.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music. But glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity.
This is not up for debate. What you said was stupid and inappropriate. Keep your mom jokes off of this board.

What’s not up for debate? What was I even attempting to debate?
I mean, I conceded to your eminence, agreed what I said was (intentionally) stupid, and I accepted your executive declaration that it was inappropriate, so what’s left to debate? Is this just another one of those situations where you are relishing your opportunity to “smug” someone or something? Are you saying I was trying to fight for my right to continue using a “joke” I had previously used a grand total of around 0 times, and gave no indication that I planned to use it a second time?
I apologize, but I’m a little confused.
You made your point, I accepted it,then I attempted to make mine. I disagreed with your assessment of the situation, and tried to offer a counterpoint from my own assessment, for the purposes of my defense (right or wrong), mostly to illustrate that I did not mean anything by it.
I did this knowing full well that papa John’s words would be the final words, and knowing full well that papa John also holds some responsibility for the overall preservation of this site, meaning I’m not trying to trip him up.
I understand your position here, but I’m having a hard time trying to figure out why you try to speak to someone you don’t know like you are their father. This may come as a shock to you up there, but there are ways to state your case without coming across as a smug, pretentious, and pompous person.
But,even with living with the knowledge that I’d be nothing without being able to bask in the glow of your light, and that I would never be considered smart and/or appropriate as long as I was living in your shadow, I still tried to explain my side , while understanding the actual effect the issue. Not to justify it or lobby for future use, but to point out I meant nothing by it, I became aware that there are still people that would take offense to something like that , and understood that this wouldn’t be the right place to do it again (should I try to make the “1” in the “1 in a million” the winner).

What about Hebron Fangupo?
Displayed a lot of power in the position drills. I didn’t see much difference between Fangupo and Poe.
You don't see much difference?
Fangupo – 6’1", 323lbs, 5.16 40, 36 reps, 31.5" vertical, 32.75" arms
Poe – 6’4", 346lbs, 4.87 40, 44 reps, 29.5" vertical, 32" arms
They are nothing alike. Fangupo is a little short and a little weaker and a little slower but has longer arms. However, Fanupo is a more polished player

JPP was not drafted for college production
but potential at 15th overall at that. If Jason Pierre-Paul can only play one season and get drafted on potential alone so can Poe

where have you been, do you not remember Timmons? Again, your over anaylzing this drill. This is actually a bad drill, and it makes the players focus more on moving to the next bag quickly rather than popping through the bag and using your hips perfect. I didnt see any guys really kill this drill.

This just in, Todd McShay is a moron
He said Mohamed Sanu is slow and can’t get open? What the hell was he watching in the film room. Sanu was double and triple teamed in college and still managed to get open and catch 115 balls. My hate for McShay went up another level. Not fair that people like Dan Kadar spend years actually writing sensible stuff and never get a chance at the big stuff (TV, ESPN, etc) yet you get a bumbling fool like McShay who knows nothing and he is allowed to be on ESPN.

Hate to break it to you...
but no one one your team is running a legit 40 in anything under 4.7 (and that’s being generous). The timing at the combine is much stricter (and more accurate) than whatever your coach is timing.
Not trying to be a jerk, but I just hate when everyone thinks kids on their HS teams were running legit 4.4’s. The top HS players in the nation barely hit the 4.4 range, and the average all-state WR would probably be somewhere around a 4.6 or maybe even 4.7
If your coach timed you at a 4.4, go run at the combine and you’re probably more like a 4.9. Not to mention that most of these guys weigh like 220 or 240 lbs, not 170.
That is wrong actually
My boy ran a 4.32 at the Rutgers combine on an electric track. He is the #1 HS Football sophomore in the nation and is 6’0 195lbs. Him and my other dude won the HS National 2 by 100 meter championship in Oregon. Look em up. Jabrill Peppers and Leonte Carroo. They are legit.

They may be legit...
But I guarantee you if you send your boy to run at the NFL combine, he isn’t going to be running a 4.32. Those Nike combines (and all HS combines to be honest) are notorious for inflating times. It makes their camps look better, which in turn means more $
I am not saying that they are not fast, or are not ever going to be capable of hitting those times, I am just saying that there are probably less than a handful of high schoolers in the world who can run a legit 4.32, let alone as sophomores
He can run a legit 4.32. I bet you that
When he makes to NFL Combine he will run in the 4.2’s.

I wasn't sure if there was anything else
But his 40 time makes me more confident in him. I agree with your list below, I might put him above Poe at this point because of some of the available pieces at NT.
But this is a great year to need a NT and an ILB

I stand corrected. Hightower ran faster than Burfict. Never saw that coming.
Maybe, but THAT much faster?!? Burfict blew the most important interview of his life today.
This is part of the reason why I am bigger on Hightower, clearly, one of them prepared for this day and one of them did not. I’d take the character guy, especially at that position.
by Neal Coolong on Feb 27, 2012 7:20 PM EST up reply actions
Insane. Did you see some of Burficts quotes from his interviews? Jaw-droppingly stupid. How did no one coach him not to say some of the crap he said is beyond me.

He probably smoked a Fatty before his drills and interview. Someone said they saw Pacman Jones and Santonio Holmes there with Burfict.
Wow, Kuechly runs a 4.5 and jumps a 38" vertical
He is probably the 2nd most athletic ILB in this class and with his instincts, that is just insane

With the depth at ILB in this years class and the fact that you could get a potential starter in round 4 or 5, I would rather have a stud like Poe at 24 and get a mid round ILB. Also, NT is a bigger need IMO

I’d take Hightower over Poe now. You really don’t need a ton of straight line speed to play that position, and you don’t have to cover that much in this defense. What he has, though, isn’t measured here. He’s smart, he’s a great leader, he knows the game very well, he played in an elite conference and put up elite numbers while being a captain of a national championship team.
This is a guy the Steelers can transition into a great team kind of linebacker. Future captain. It’s great that Poe can both squat and outrun cars, but I think Hightower is a better choice for both now and in the future.

for a LB, that short burst demonstrates
the ability to fill a gap/hole and meet the RB at the line of scrimmage.
for OL, it is the ability to get up field to the 2nd level and block the LB or DB
and for an DL, it is demonstrates response to the ball snap and the ability to penetrate and rush the passer before he can release

no but for some people who had bad combines or did not participate they can save themselves
Guys like Criner, Jordan White, Ryan Tannehill, Vontze Burfict, Courtney Upshaw, Chris Rainey, etc. can all help themselves trememdously with a good pro day because they had bad combines

He did not run the 40 and is now being talked about as strictly a 4-3 DE
If he can run a good 40 at the combine, he will go back to being talked about as either a 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 DE which will help with his draft stock because he will be scheme diverse

I know what I said earlier
But the more I think about it, I wouldn’t be shocked if Poe is gone before we pick. Given the huge day he had (although he apparently looked raw in some positional drills, which isn’t surprising), the Chiefs could snag him. I think they have bigger needs on the OL, but Romeo loves large bodies, and Poe certainly fits that.

The best time since 06 is 6.69
by Sam Acho last year
Ingram was 6.83
Conner Barwin 6.87
Chris Carter was 6.88
Watt 6.88 as well
Mario Williams was 7.19
Adam Carriker 7.06
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Wow
Today was huge for the Steelers, we learned a TON.
One, we confirmed alot of what we knew about Poe. He’s a man child freak, but he’s raw as hell. The physical skill set is off the charts, but his hand technique didn’t really impress me, which is what I’ve seen for a while.
Two, Hightower is a quality first round draft pick. He ran well, and looked good enough in his position drill sfor him to make sense to me as the pick. I would love to have him here, and might prefer him over Poe.
Three. Wow, really Vontaze Burfict? I’m absolutely flabbergasted. I cannot have imagined him coming in and really laying an egg in the physical skill set portion of things. The fact that he ran slower than Poe says everything I need to hear. Stay as far away as possible. What always impressed me was his physical skill set, and clearly, it’s not there anymore.
Four. Ta’Amu looked pretty decent. I was pleased with his 10 yard split, and his total 40 time. I didn’t get to see him in the position drills, but what I did see made me think he’d be worthy of pick 2.24.
Five. Overall I was very pleased with the LB crew. Zach Brown, Nigel Bradham and Tank Carder all had pretty decent displays today, Mychal Kendricks basically lit the world on fire, and Bobby Wagner didn’t even get the opportunity to participate today. Very deep class.

Ok
So what’s the verdict? I haven’t been following this, but what are the chances the steelers can get Poe? Slim to none from what i can tell.
The possible teams who could take him
Chiefs at 11, too high and have other needs
Jets at 16, took Ellis last year and have a lot of other needs like pass rusher
Chargers at 18, have major needs at DB and OLB and could upgrade their ILB and OT spots.
If he makes it past the Chargers were good.
However there is the chance a 4-3 team is stupid and takes him when he is clearly going to be better at NT. Teams like the Eagles, Bengals or Falcons.
Huge fan of the Steelers. (that includes "Steelers West")

Beat me to it!
Chargers have to get a pass rusher. Absolutely must. It would solve SO many problems on their defense. The Jets are in an extremely similar position, but they’ve got some issues in their defensive backfield that need to be addressed. Not to mention they need all kinds of skill players on offense (RB, probably WR). I wouldn’t write the Chiefs off as being too high. They did take a safety top five a few years ago. They need major offensive line rework though, and I would be surprised if it weren’t one of David DeCastro or Jonathon Martin. I would be really surprised to see a 4-3 team take him though. He’s just a little too big and not quite quick enough. He’s a 0 technique. He had an awesome combine, but that doesn’t change who he is.

I don't disagree one bit
But there were so many people who were saying that surely they wouldn’t pick him because he’s a safety. If they think he’s the right fit, they’ll take him at 11.

1. I agree, because I don’t think every 4-3 team strictly plays a 4-3, but yes, the beauty of Poe is the fact he just isn’t going to be able to play the 3-technique – or at the least, no forward-thinking team is going to take him in the first round to play the 3-technique. That alone should make him fall.
2. You really do have to worry about BPA though. How far from being a top-tier team is Cincinnati? They couldn’t find a way to put this guy on the field in running scenarios while bouncing a guy like Atkins in and out? Zimmer’s got some mad scientist sh1t goin’ on, I could see him utilizing any defensive lineman with Poe’s athleticisim effectively.

What are Cincy's needs?
I guess with two 1st rounders they can play games but wouldn’t they be more likely to take a WR and a DB (or are they good at DB)?
I also wonder what the chances are that both Poe and Hightower drop to the Steelers.

It depends on who they keep of their FA
If they don’t sign Peko DT becomes more of a need

I’ve written over 400 stories for BTSC since 2008, maybe four or five of them had more than half of their traffic coming directly. Usually, searches make up 2/3s of it.
BTSC thanks you!

You and many others
Thanks for tuning in. Thought this week was going to be the start of some really slow traffic. We’re actually not too far from in-season levels.
by Neal Coolong on Feb 27, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
Oh I was going to say haha
There’s no way I drove much of that traffic. I HIGHLY doubt people were coming to read my opinion. They were looking for you, John and Seton Hall. There’s not too many other places I’ve ever found where people share my passion for the draft.

That’s exactly where my math was. But it won’t hurt when the bill payers come knocking.

I’m not even sure if we’ve done anything like this for the Combine. Guaranteed, though, I’m selling out for the draft. I’m talkin’ live and updated mocks running in real time next to the actual draft…people are far more into this than I thought this community was.
by Neal Coolong on Feb 27, 2012 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
Ditto
and if you need people for that, while I’m sure there are more intelligent people, I’d definitely be in.

Intelligence isn’t a factor. I’m a moron.
I’m kicking some ideas to the Big Boss, we’ll figure something out.
I’m thinking of something in real time, we can’t trade ourselves, but if the teams trade, then we adjust to it.
Real time, as in, you have the Colts, when they go on the clock, you make your pick. If/when St. Louis trades No. 2 to Cleveland, John, who has Cleveland, drafts second, then I’ll wait for four to draft for St. Louis.
I don’t want to do a mock as much as a real time interactive thing to go along with an open thread like this one.

Knowledgeable was probably a better term
I obviously can’t speak for everyone else, but I will be spending at least 90% of the NFL draft online. I would love to do so here, and that certainly sounds like a reason for me to be here.

Yeah I know what you mean
You need some evidence, last year I did a post on pre-draft visits for Steelers. I looked back at it and correctly predicted Marcus Gilbert and Cortez Allen would be drafted by the Steelers. My rounds were wrong though. I may do another one this year since I know a little more about evaluating prospect this year then last

Curtis Brown
You mention later in the thread that the list didn’t include suspected visits which you then listed in comments. Curtis Brown was one of the players mentioned.

I know if I do one this year I will use suspected visits too
as well as the "mold’ for each position the Steelers look for. I am trying to get an even more accurate prediction.

which isn’t to be taken as a slight about last year’s predictions.

Not just Steelers fans
I think we are seeing a lot of fans from other teams as well. There tends to be decent debate here with a few folks that actually know what they are talking about. I enjoy the input from the fans from the other teams. It helps keep things in perspective.

I agree...
…I know nothing about the crop of draftees, but following this at least gets me familiar with names that I’ll recognize come draft day.
I mainly sit and listen, throwing in a snarky comment or two when humor seems appropriate.
Thanks to seton, Steel34D, John, and all the others for your patience when I do throw a question in. How you guys have time to get to know all this about the draftees just amazes me, but makes this site even better.

Like answering the question
because there is always that one question that maybe I didn’t know and my personality drives me to find out. Personally for me I have a fairly good memory, add that to the time put in watching these guys and it not hard to keep it straight. Hell I started looking at prospects like 4-5 years ago so I could seem more knowledgeable when talking football. The more I research the more I enjoyed trying to predict who the Steelers would draft.
Yeah I voted twice already as well

I wish I could have watched the combine all day and chatted with everyone as well. Great info, though. Thanks, guys!

Defense
Steelers signed a couple of players, Mario Harvey (LB- Marshall) and Myron Rolle FS.
Harvey was on their draft board a couple years ago and signed him when Indy let him go. I think Harvey has a great chance to make the team. Speed and size with a motor and mean streak. Special teams player
I’m very excited about Myron Rolle. He was injured early in his rookie season and managed only to come back to the PS in TN. He has tremendous potential and I hope he brings it to fruition in Pittsburgh.
HERE WE GO STEELERS!
"Our Father, who art in Pittsburgh, Football be thy game. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, at Heinz Field as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, a stellar D and forgive us our bogus fines, as we (sorta) forgive Goodell who trespasses against us. And lead us not into defeat, but deliver us a Victory. For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."
"Oh... you're a northerner. What exactly do they call 'you people' from Pittsburgh?" "They just call us LUCKY."
Harvey
Didn’t he get some playing time in the pre-season last year? I can’t remember how he performed.

I think he got a couple of special teams snaps in the first game
but he was cut early in camp. I didn’t like the guy and was pissed people were saying get him in the 4th or so rounds.
