Super Bowl Pick and a quick thought on our QB situation

Here is how I think the game goes. NY Giants 34 NE Patriots 17. I think the game is going to go the same as the Giants Packers game. The Pats and the Pack are not that different of a team except that the linebackers are better on the Pack and the line is better for the Pats. I just think that the Giants are on a roll and cant be stopped.

Now to my against the grain. I have never been a Colt fan at all and am surprised they even won one Super Bowl. But I do love Peyton Manning. I was thinking. Ben has about 5 year maximum of good QB play left. I think if Peyton is healthy I think the Steelers should trade Big Ben and sign Peyton. Peyton has I think at least 3 good more year. But with that we can get a good draft couple of draft picks with a Big Ben trade. My main reasoning behind this is that I will never forgive Ben for what he did in Georgia. I will support him only if it helps the Steelers.

I think unless there is a no-trade clause Peyton would love to come to Pittsburgh. I know our line is iffy but some of those sacks that Ben takes is his fault. SO i think with Peytons release it will help our Lines. We have RB's and WR's for Peyton and still have a decent team. I am not saying we don't have a shot with Ben but I think this could take us over the top and maybe get us a little younger with those picks.

So have at it and tear it up But I think it could work.

Hit return too fast

…2 If Peyton was healthy enough to trade, why wouldn’t the Colts keep him? You would take a proven QB, healthwise, and trade him for a possible risk?
…3 What could the Colts possibly trade, pickwise, that would be worth Ben? Not their #1, since they will use it either to pick Luck, or to trade down to get a bevy of picks to fix all the other problems they have (unlikely).

he's saying sign Peyton when the Colts release him

I personally wouldnt do it. but if Ben is getting traded and we have the space it could work. we send Ben to Seattle for two 1st round picks and more (should get more than the Carson Palmer trade since Ben is much more accomplished and younger.) we bring in DeCastro and trade up from 24 to get Kuechly too with the extra ammo. that makes it easy to cut Kemo and Foote and Farrior. we’d still have extra picks to spare and two 1sts in 2013
im not saying go do it. im just playing devils advocate

No and then what after Peyton?? Try to find another franchise qb to be as successful as BB? It took us

23 years or more to find him. He will be here for awhile longer and he has never steered us wrong. Too bad you can’t forgive him for his past Indiscretions. I wonder if you have been forgiven for yours?

If Peyton is healthy

Ben only has a couple more years then him. Why not get started earlier. I am not looking forward to a new QB search but I think a healthy Peyton on this team would put us over the top.

First

None of us know what happened in GA and whatever did take place, Ben has made an attempt to set right (at least with the Steeler’s fans and organization).

Second and as steelladyinVA pointed out, it took us23 years to find Ben, do we really want to look for another franchise QB particularly when Ben is likely hitting his peak?

Third, I’m a big fan of Peyton Manning. I think he is a tremendous talent with an astonishingly strategic mind. But, right now he is a unknown commodity coming out of this injury. But, on top of that given our cap issues its not a viable trade and there is no way they would offer us what Ben is worth.

I think it's possible that for someone to suggest something like this...

didn’t go through the ‘bad’ years where our QB play was so mediocre. Some people out there are ‘new’ fans (not suggesting lshaffer_69 is because I don’t know) and they don’t realize that we weren’t always so blessed at the QB position. We went through a lot of down years, or more like years when we could have maybe won a few championships, if it weren’t for our poor QB play.
Our defense has almost always been dominant and all that we lacked was a great QB. We got him in Ben and I say never let him go!! They are many people that still say that Ben is a game manager and don’t give him the credit that he deserves, and that he isn’t elite. I say it’s the system that he is in and hopefully in the near future, we will see some beneficial changes for him and the team in general because this team should be capable of putting up pretty big numbers.

Ben has already broken most of Bradshaw’s records and in his first year of play went 15-1. There is no way that the record could have been better, since Ben won all of his first season’s games. In that first season, he was a game manager but you could see some of the heroics already coming out (in spite of Cowher and Whiz). They were afraid to put the game in his hands, and they were probably right. The point is, is that for 24 years we never won a championship and since Ben has been here, all we have done is win!! I don’t think that any of the faithful on this site will ever want him traded or cut no matter what! After all, we are football fans, and we want the best players out there that we can get and I think we have found them!

I think it was a combination of both. I remember him being hurt, but it also didn’t seem like a bad injury. It seemed like how Mendenhall was “injured” this season in that game that Dwyer had 100+ yards. Maddox was still sucking pre-injury

Tommy was just a spark plug for us in 2002

Kordell really wasn’t playing well and it was affecting the whole team, so they put Maddox in and the team feeds off his good play.

Once opposing teams got enough tape on him they exposed him for being a below average QB. Our playcalling didn’t help either (letting Maddox air it out all the time).

Do you feel the same about OJ Simpson?

Not saying that I know what Ben did or that I can’t forgive him, but I think a lot of Steelers fans find “until proven guilty” a little too convenient. Legally innocent is not always the same as truly innocent. The DA made the details pretty clear, but the physical evidence was lacking. Maybe Ben’s condom fit better than OJ’s glove.

by TorchM on Feb 4, 2012 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Torch

Why would you need a huge image makeover if nothing happened. Why did you just settle from the first Lawsuit.
My 12 year old son asked me again this year what happened and I had to explain it to him. I hope my son idolizes me for working hard and being a good father but I love sports and he always watches it with me. So he starts Idolizing these guys.

by lshaffer_69 on Feb 5, 2012 2:20 AM EST up reply actions

? Wow. Why would he need an image makeover? Hmmmm. Because football is a 10 billion dollar a year business and is very image conscious. Whether it’s true or not has nothing to do with the image makeover. The reality is that a lot of people are stupid, and will decide how they feel about him based on something as silly as wearing his hat backwards on the sideline., or having that ridiculous hairstyle. There is a reason that the league and the teams pay publicists a lot of money to spin stories and shape images.
As far as “just settle” I don’t know if you mean “just settle” as in…actually settling instead of fighting, or if you’re talking about the time it took to finally settle. But if it’s the first one, why do you think? Is it not fishy to you that there were no criminal charges, but a civil suit was brought? Hmmm…i wonder why that is.
Him settling means nothing except putting an end to it. Famous people settle all the time, guilty or not.

Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?

by FrankWyt on Feb 5, 2012 3:00 AM EST up reply actions

Well this is easy…

Why would you need a huge image makeover if nothing happened?

Your image is independent of the truth. Once the media and the public have characterized you that is your image and it is hard to change. Take Ndamukong Suh for example. After the personal foul penalties some in the media tried to make him out as a “thug”. However off the field I have heard that Suh is nothing but one of the kindest most respectable people to be with. So if the media have plagued Ben with this viscous image he has to change it.

Why did you just settle from the first Lawsuit.

I point you to a line form The Social Network
“Pay them. In the scheme of things it’s a
speeding ticket. That’s what Sy will tell
you tomorrow.”
No good lawyer wouldn’t highly recommend settling in a case where there is nothing but circumstantial evidence and a battle between stories. There wasn’t evidence to prove Ben innocent nor guilty but enough to prove he made bad decisions. Thus he could have fought the law suit. Continued to have this issue in the media and it marking his image. If he did this and lost he would have had to pay out a bucket load and the plaintiff could have sold her story to anyone. Or he could settle, it would mean paying her but it would be a smaller amount and it would force them to sign a non-disclosure agreement that if she continued to say these thing he could go after her with the full force of the justice system behind him. Yes he would pay but once the issue died sponsors will comeback and he will be able to make more. Settling is not an admission of guilt but a way to get the issue to end.

Do I think Ben committed a crime or criminal act in either case? No. Do I think he committed bad judge meant that involved questionable morals and piggish attitude? Probably, but that it not a crime. Do I think this may have finally change him? Yeah I’d like to.

Huge fan of the Steelers. (that includes "Steelers West")

Why would we trade

A franchise QB with ‘5’ years left, for a WB with ‘3’ years left??
And if you can’t “forgive” Ben for what happened in Georgia (which according to the court of law was nothing), then why not just be a Peyton Manning fan, for which ever team he plays for? Peyton is maybe the best QB ever in the NFL, it is certainly debatable, but he wouldn’t last with our OLine, and I couldn’t possibly be happier that Ben is our qb. Besides, theyre trying to dump a $100 mill QB, not take on another one, especially right before they draft Luck. And they need all the picks they can get, that team is terrible.

not really sure I understand your logic

so…..you are not willing to forget what Ben did in Georgia, but are willing to support him only if he helps the steelers get back to the superbowl and win it another time or two? If you were a Penn State fan and Sandusky was completely aquitted from any allegations, came back to coach Penn State and helped them win a championship, you would support him?

What I meant is

While he is a Steeler I will support him for the better of the team and that’s it.

I would never support Penn State whoever is there coach. As for Sundusky I will say this Joe Pa deserved to be fired for this situation. If Sandusky is found not guilty if he gets a job some where that is on that person that hired him. Also if he is found not guilty he should be a free man.

The Big Deal

is have you ever seen Manning avoid the rush time and time again and make a great play or do you see what I see when he just ducks and covers for fear of contact.

George Carlin : "I used a lot of cocaine, and man, it was fun."

by steeltech on Feb 11, 2012 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

I see him duck and cover when it’s a smart decision to do so, because the play is broken. That’s what great/smart QB’s do…Ben should take a lesson.

However, I’ve seen him stand in the face of pressure many, many times, and I’ve seen him take hits way worse than Ben that I could give you a youtube link to. And watched him come back after missing one play…

Is it possible that you are looking for a way to discredit an amazing talent?

Whatever way you want to paint him, before last season, he had missed a grand total of 0 games since his freshman year in high school. Even the biggest (insert word you’d use) can’t avoid contact all the time, no matter what, they will take big hits…yet…there he is…every game…

I think a pressing issue could be at the back up QB position...

I’m actually a Dolphins fan, so I usually don’t follow the Steelers too closely, but aren’t most (if not all) of Pittsburgh’s back up QBs slated to enter free agency? Big Ben is a great starting QB, but if he goes down, who will they put in next year?
