Giants Win Super Bowl XLVI 21-17 Over New England Patriots

It was a classic in the score far moreso than the play on the field.

To put the Giants' 21-17 win in Super Bowl XLVI over New England as something epic is misguided. But they still won it. It was their fourth championship, and incidentally, New England's fourth Super Bowl loss.

An uneven and bizarre season came to a close in a way more fitting with the past than with the future. In the supposed Year of the Quarterback (thank you, ESPN), neither quarterback played particularly well through four quarters, and it was lesser heralded guys who won it for New York, and lost it for New England.

Star-divide

Mario Manningham looked lazy in trying to get his feet down on what should have been a reception in the third quarter. In the fourth, he made the best Super Bowl catch since Santonio at the back pylon in Super Bowl XLIII, helping out eventual game MVP Eli Manning.

Conversely, Wes Welker, who led the league in catches this year, and Aaron Hernandez, who played very well in the more-or-less absence of TE Rob Gronkowski, dropped good passes from Patriots QB Tom Brady on their series - not to mention former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch.

Neither offense looked particularly sharp, and perhaps that's an issue of coaching. The Giants managed to win the game despite examples of poor clock management. No coaching flub was bigger, though, than the obvious lack of foresight that the Patriots would allow the Giants to score from six yards out. Bradshaw ran to about the one-foot line before realizing no one was going to tackle him, and it appeared he was too far along to stop and fall down at the one, which would have allowed the Giants to force the Patriots to use their final timeout.

Instead, Bradshaw scored, giving the Patriots a timeout and 57 seconds to try to make something happen.

They nearly did, too.

Brady heaved a prayer from midfield on a play in which Gronkowski was trailing in an effort to scoop up any deflections. The deflection came, and it appeared Gronkowski could have gotten to the ball.

Maybe that's what high ankle sprains do to your quickness. Or your offense. The Patriots struggled outside dominating drives at the end of the first half and the start of the second. They put two touchdowns on the board in that time, but only three points otherwise.

The biggest missed opportunity the Patriots had was in the fourth quarter, holding onto a 17-12 lead. Brady was working the ball down the field, but poor throws forced a punt that gave Manning the ball back with time to score.

That's Eli Manning, the new clutch QB of the NFL.

He took his team down for the eventual game-winning touchdown.

There's no longer an issue between the Giants and the Patriots dating back from 2007. Manning has established himself as today's 4th quarter quarterback.

Brady's got no bones on that.

There was obviously some kind of Peyton embargo either placed by the network or by Peyton himself (through threats of a hissy fit or simply hiding somewhere the cameras could see him, I vote the latter), they had no one else to show so it was nothing but Mr. Kraft.

by Neal Coolong on Feb 5, 2012 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

No Peyton was appropriate.

The networks and the news agencies all wanted it to be about Peyton. Lame. There’s a story there, but it ran its course on day one of the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl.

And ESPN’s talking head door that asked Eli what it was like yadda yadda yadda in the House Peyton Built yadda yadda got pretty well shut up by Eli. Classy response by Eli, but man, were his gears churning upstairs or what? How unfair to ask that question? Dumb@#$.

This just made the 2011 season, a sweet one to savor

Sure the Steelers lost in the 1st round of the playoffs. But to see punk azz Brady lose for the 2nd time in the SB to the Giants, to get shown how a REAL clutch QB plasy like, well, like the commercial says, that was PRICELESS. Attaboy ELI!

1st Neal... accurate summary of the game....

neither team played spot on to out shine the other… Surprisingly, was not the Brady down in flames joy at games end I expected I would feel… Glad of the result, just not so much how the game was called by both OC’s…I thought the giants red zone play calling was particularly unimaginative, and was equally surprised that the Pats didnt try to mix it up a bit more, rather using just Welker and Hernandez almost exclusively, without any attempt really to run the ball…. Eli certainly does deserve his credit for his role in 1st getting his team to the superbowl, and then finsihing… one of the best personal year long performances, 7 times I think bringing his team back from deficts…
All in all….. congrats Tom Conklin, you did a fine job … FYI (Mr Mara) I think you need to look around a bit more….no fans in any sport are more supportive the Steeler fans….

Those two networks should care the most. The Monday Night and Sunday Night games and markets are ENORMOUS. We’re talking BILLION dollar contracts. Besides, when the rubber meets the road, what they did was and is illegal, and it’s a cheap way to get an advantage. It’s not the reason they won championships.

Personally, I’m ok with the fact they won championships in that era as long as they continue failing to win after they got caught.

Even if he’s been striking out lately, he’s still a genius in my eyes. He turned a skinny quarterback that wasn’t even good enough to be number two on the depth chart his first couple years at MI and made him one of the best ever. He has turned Wes Welker in to the most productive wr, he made Vrabel an effective tight end. the list goes on. He may be too arrogant for his own good now, and it’s biting him in the ass, but you still can’t take away what he’s done. Last year and this years Pats teams were terrible if you used the eye test, somehow they won 27 games in the regular season.

I think that if anyone benefitted from the taping other team’s practices, it was Belichick. I think Brady is a great QB, but Belichick’s elite coach status is derived largely from the years where he had an unfair advantage.

grain of salt

by PaulMorel on Feb 6, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

It’s more so derived from the fact that he has used other teams rejects to build a dynasty. He made Brady, the same way he made Cassell and fleeced a team out of draft picks. Look at Deion Branch after he left…did nothing. Then, he comes back, he’s productive again.

They put up numbers – Eli in the fourth – but they didn’t score points. They weren’t sharp all game, and history will bear out it was one of the weaker MVP performances in SB history

Knee-jerk reaction. Sure, maybe he’ll go to the Hall, that’s fine, all I’m saying is he missed a few throws, held onto the ball too long, and didn’t score much. It wasn’t a great game.

Santonio in XLIII, that was a great game. Hell, I’d make just as strong an argument for Justin Tuck as MVP. Doesn’t mean he’s not deserving of it, I’m just saying it wasn’t a well-played game.

That dude’s the balls…but as for Brady, let’s keep in mind he took an intentional grounding in the end zone on his team’s first play, threw three into the defensive line and threw a pick. Very true, there was a time he was dialed in, but there were lots of times he wasn’t.

why is it ok now? Haven’t we seen enough? It seems like 90% of the comments on this site are based in Arians bashing. When is enough enough? And now that he’s gone, isn’t time to freaking move on? Obviously my Steeler loyalty prevents me from thinking like this, but I almost want the offense next season to be horrible, just so I can get the reactions of all the experts on this site that talk all the crap about Arians.

We can't go a post without his name coming up, can we?

What I find funny is the sheer hatred I brought out by speaking kind of negatively about Todd Haley, yet, I’m fairly certain SteelerNation would vote in favor of crucifying Bruce Arians if it was up to them.

Rolling my eyes

Please Neal. It wasn’t you ‘pushing them a bit over the edge’. Its that it was your relentless bashing of the guy that made people sick. We all had concerns with the guy, thats understood. But you were attached the man at every oppurtunity. Like I said before, you were unreasonable. It wasn’t a I don’t like the guy and I think he isn’t a good fit. It was more of a ‘you guys are crazy for even having hopes that he could work out’. Your hatred for Haley was more unfounded than most people’s hatred for Arians. You refused to anything positive about him when clearly he has positive traits. You only focused on the negative, which is what I call unreasonable. Everyone knew the negative but you were too blind in your hatred to understand that. There were some people that thought it was interesting that the other fans liked the guy. And I didn’t see anyone on from this site say that anything that actually happened, didn’t happened. Either way its clear you still fail to see how you amassed a personal crusade against the guy before he even finished an interview. Would I give Todd Haley a chance? Sure, if the Steelers hired him. Do I think he has some negatives that we should be conerned about? Of course. But you have to recognized the positives also.

Either way I like your writing. I like what you contribute to this site. And I don’t think ill of you at all. I don’t take your current comments personally at all, just when I read them it just wreaks of a person who ’doesn’t get it’.

I love the Steelers.

SB40 did have two big plays, so did this game. They both sucked over all. That big run by Parker was a defensive melt down by Sea, and the same could be said for the WR to WR play. How many times did the Steelers run a play like that from that part of the field that season?

Glad to see the Giants win

Tom Brady’s postseason struggles continue since January of 2005. From 2001-2004, it was Brady who was cool under pressure and making the clutch plays, all under the age of 26. Since then, not so much.

It is odd to see a future HOF QB struggle in the postseason in his prime and beyond when he played so well as a young player. Troubling.

Big win for the Giants, hard to believe they lost to Washington at home before getting on a roll. For the Pats, they needed this win for their legacy, and once again, failed to deliver.

Alright was it just me

or did every close call/no-call go in the Patsies’ favor? I counted at least 4 or 5 close calls that all went for NE. A hold against NY followed by a no-call on PI when the defender had his arm around the WRs waste. Another no call on PI when the NE player grabbed the NY WR’s shoulder. I just don’t recall any balance in the close calls.

Those first 3 SB wins

They kept it just close enough that, if true, the Spygate info gathered on opposing defenses would come in handy for that last game winning drive.

And the fact is that the Pats had pretty solid defenses during those years to keep them in games. Advance Football Stats did a study a few years ago that showed that the Pats won more games than was statistically expected during those years, which lent credence to the idea that the videotaping did give them an unusual advantage.

You're guys videotaped signals, practices, and took detailed notes.

Then when the NFL demanded you’re guys to hand over the evidence, they waffled. Then Goodell stepped in and had all of the notes and videotapes destroyed as well as sent threatening letters to a former Pats staffer who had some additional evidence until he turned over what he had to also be destroyed and Bill Belichek to this day says he never saw anything or knew anything about what went on under his watch. Plus, go back and watch this season’s Giants-Packers game. I am still 99% certain the league was trying to use officiating to rig that game. Which would be emblematic of the entire Goodell era. Fuckin rotten to the core.

I find the entire Goodell regime disturbing. It reflects how far the sport has fallen that owner love this guy. Of course, it also makes sure that when the history of the NFL is written, the blame will fall squarely on the owners. Not that that saves the players or the fans from any torment now.

Maybe it's Pats fans who search for things to make them sleep better at night.

We’ve listened since SB40 how the refs “gave us” that game (not that Seattle didn’t make plays to win…or damn the Steelers never quit and played decent enough to win) so sit down, grab your fork and eat the “we actually did cheat to gain unfair advantage” sandwich that will sit on your table every time you count your teams Lombardi’s.

My sympathies are for Wes Welker as a player. The Pats organization… well, they chose to cheat and when everyone uses the word “genius” and “dynasty” and “well run organization”… don’t forget to add “cheater” because that applies too.

Tom Brady

Wasn’t the Tom Brady we know today until 2007. He wasn’t a spectacular QB in 2001, ’03 and ’04….just good enough when it mattered to get the job done. The defense had a lot more to do with those titles than people give them credit for.

by pistil_stamen on Feb 6, 2012 1:54 AM EST up reply actions

Actually this is true

Brady at that time was similar to Eli. Not amazing, nothing really special but knew how to win come crunch time. Wonder if Eli starts to dominate with all of that confidence now

by Majabe on Feb 7, 2012 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

This was a pretty lousy game

You can point to the numbers and how close it was all you want, but really this was an underachieving effort by both sides.

Basically you hardly had any long plays, pretty much everything was a 5-8 yard play and methodical chain moving. Such is the new NFL offense, short patterns and almost impossible to stop plays and you just hope the other team bogs down in the RZ. The Giants did that plenty with horrible play calling (running several times on 2nd and long). Then you had penalties that were just downright dumb.

Pretty much anytime somebody tried something deep it was a bad throw, a sack, or out of bounds.

Add to that the fumbles that luckily never hurt the Giants, Brady looking pretty bad, and drops down the stretch, and you get a pretty ugly game.

That had to be the least exciting close game I’ve ever watched and it was one of the dullest I’ve seen in a while. Just the same thing drive after drive, hardly anything entertaining whatsoever.

But any game where TB is sacked a few times, gets a Safety, and throws an INT makes me happy.

agreed

The Dink and Dunk Bowl.

Boring.

There was nothing exciting except that one catch by Manningham on the sidelines that won the game. Even when the offenses were clicking it was still boring, which moved into sloppy. Same old plays for 5-8 yards.

I will say however, that Gilbride called a good game. Had the pats guessing all night.

by IronJake on Feb 6, 2012 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

A lot of people say it’s boring watching those two guys fight, but in the few I’ve seen, I find it entertaining that they methodically land punch after punch while staying in a good position to defend. They don’t really go for the knockout punch, but their style works.

I kind of felt like the Giants plan yesterday was just like that. I was also wondering what type of football you find exciting, if you don’t mind answering. Just for conversation purposes.

Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?

by FrankWyt on Feb 6, 2012 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

It’s been stated multiple times, here and elsewhere, about how the game was far from memorable, or exciting save the last few minutes. Compare this to the Pgh-AZ bowl.

Repetition is boring. Much of one quarter seemed like the rest. They both had mostly the same game plans and plays it seemed, although the Giants were more physical. Granted, I wasn’t paying attention as much as I would have had the Steelers played (I missed a number of plays and was distracted with dinner etc) so I base this on what I saw.

For your average football fan I would say it was probably ok, but anybody who’s seen any real football intuitively has to admit it was a dull game. But hey, to each his own.

by IronJake on Feb 7, 2012 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Oh and "Beligenius"

Was absolutely stumped at the end of the game. If you’re gonna let em score, do it early not after letting 45 seconds burn. The hasty challenge wasted a critical TO.

Coughlin called a pretty smart game. Not going for two early on proved to be a big deal, getting that one point made it a 4 point game at the end.

And this was very well called by the refs, although Id question the Hold on the Giants drive, looked like the guy just lost balance and got shoved down not pulled. Oh and the no call on DPI on Patrick Chung, that was bad. But those were pretty close calls not blatant misses. The rest of the game was pretty much flawless, nothing overturned at all and correctly called penalties.

by Mechem on Feb 6, 2012 12:25 AM EST reply actions

That challenge came from the guy standing DIRECTLY in front of the play happening.

No one had a better seat in the house than he did…and it was very obvious it was a catch. Terrible decision by Beligenious.

In terms of handling a full game, handling the clock, handling those quirky “we need to let them score” moments, etc. Tom Coughlin is as good as they come.

If you’re at 4:30 left, trailing by less than a TD in the Super Bowl, you’re in as good of hands as any with Coughlin.

Question to everyone about Welker's drop

Does anyone else think that Welker’s drop probably represents a lost big play moment that puts him out of Hall of Fame contention down the pike?

I’m curious what others think.

To my mind, with that drop, the HoF conversation about Welker starts shifting to “he’s a system guy in an era where the rules favored his position” and “the Pawts never won the big game with Welker out there”.

I know it’s a little early to write the guy’s obit, but if this ends up being the defining SB moment for Welker, then Welker almost becomes the inverse argument to the old Lynn Swann discussion (“great when he was needed most”).

That was a big moment in the game. It certainly cost the Pawts a FG and a shot at a TD. That moment was almost the exact moment the game fell away from New England.

Has a lot of catches and zero rings. He’s a great scrappy player who is the premiere slot receiver in the game today, but he’s not a hall of famer.

That is the argument

Pretty much for Welker to have HoF hopes the Pawts are going to have to win another Super Bowl and Welker will have to be the clear MVP of that game.

I dunno. For me, this felt like a last gasp for the Brady era. There will be more playoff runs, but barring a shift toward a more balanced (by today’s standards) attack. Even in a joystick league, every now and then you need to run the ball.

I can’t hold the fact that he didn’t want to play for Cleveland west against him. If it were me, I’d use what power I had to get out of it as well. That’s where careers go to die, it’s a loser franchise, and obviously Eli is a winner.

No one asked him if he wanted to play there. He was drafted there. Im sure every year there are players who dont want to play for the real Cleveland. Im sure there are also players who dont want to play for the Seahawks, Bears, Lions, Bills, Vikings, and so on. You dont see them crying and saying they wont play unless they get traded.

You’re right, no one asked him, but he used his “best player in the draft” power to avoid having to go to that rotting hole of an NFL franchise. He didn’t want to play for a loser.
As far as other players not wanting to play in those cities, maybe if they did fight their way out, their careers would last longer than 3 years. Also, there was no crying involved, he just laid down the law and said “I’m not playing for your embarrassment of an organization, I want to win” (paraphrasing of course)

And yes, we do know how his career would go if he was in Sd. Nowhere. Just look at that garbage. He won’t pay his best players, he treats everyone like shit, he fires his coach after a 14-2 season just to put one of the LEAST accomplished coaches in NFL history in charge. Come on man, if you cared about winning, you wouldn’t want to play in SD either.

On top of all that, the Chargers were more than adequately compensated for the trade. They got Shawne Merriman and their all pro kicker plus a pretty damn good QB. The only reason they even picked him is so they could get compensation from another team.

Why do people say he shouldve sat down? If they had a lead sure. but when youre behind you take the points you can get. kickers miss field goals (see afc championship game). also the giants had fumbled a couple times

by thetackle on Feb 6, 2012 10:04 AM EST reply actions

It was second down

if he sat the pats would have had to burn their last timeout and the giants get to run another play, therefore taking more time off the clock. they could have ran the clock down about 10 more seconds and still scored, brady could have gotten the ball back with 45 seconds instead of 59s. If they had not gotten in on the next play you would have had about 5 seconds left on the clock with a extra point distance FG to win the game. How many extra points do you see missed in the NFL… not many. Thats why. :)

I love the Steelers.

I see both sides. If the game was tied, I’d be more comfortable with the field goal strategy, and I totally understand sitting on it. I thought it was a dumb move when it happened, but it worked out. I would just never feel comfortable leaving it up to a kicker from any distance. (maybe it’s because of the kicker we have that I don’t trust them…_)

MANNINGS

Will ELI be considered the best Manning, when all is said and done??

by stefan on Feb 6, 2012 11:48 AM EST reply actions

Well Peyton’s career is pretty much over with besides a 1-2 year stint with the Redskins (which still means it is over with).

While Eli is only getting better, has an INSANE group of WR that haven’t even reached their full potential (scary) and a extremely young and very, very talented team around him.

So yes, I think Eli will be the better Manning.

Manning can win another ring before he retires. He knows how to win on the road in the playoffs — few HoF QBs could even do that on a regular basis.

Which Manning are you talking about now? Eli has 5 road wins in his last 2 Superbowl runs, so lets not try to make it seem like Peyton is doing anything more special than little bro is.

The word “Manning” very much has 2 meanings now.

And I just can’t see Peyton going to a talented enough team to make another run. He is 36, will never be the same he once was before the surgery, and there are reports flying around that the Deadskins are highly interested in getting him.

We will see, but as of right now, I’m putting my money on Eli having more rings than Peyton.

The QB position

will likely always carry more weight than other positions in terms of what the voters think. Even if Eli’s career stats don’t approach HOF locks like his older brother, Eli should finish as the Giants all time leading passer, and that will be good enough. Another factor in Eli’s favor is simply playing in New York.

Ben is in a similar boat, his career stats won’t be at the level of Brady and Brees, but the winning and eventual franchise leader in passing will be more than enough. As I’ve said before, only another serious off field issue could derail # 7 in the years ahead.

The Snake

I think Stabler is hurt by hanging on over the last several years of his career, while he played at an old age, his effectiveness really tailed off after 30. Stabler’s off field lifestyle wasn’t conducive to a long, effective career. That said, there was a period in the mid 70s, when he was outstanding.

After leading the Raiders to victory in the January 1977 Super Bowl, Stabler had an off year in 1979, and combined with issues with the Oakland front office, led to his trade to Houston in 1980. So it was an aging Jim Plunkett, not Stabler, who led the Raiders to the world title in 1980.

I can see you not thinking Simms should be in, but why Young? His stats are insane, and he has the championship.
How is Young being in an insult to Montana? SF had a genuine QB controversy even during the season that the 9ers won their 3rd SB of the decade, and again the next season.

Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
