ESPN reports Haley new OC

According to source, Steelers have hired Todd Haley has been hired as new Steelers OC.

Let me be the first to say: "What the hell?" IS this the best that can be done? I mean, cmon. Todd Haley? Does he have pics of Rooney in bed with a life girl or dead boy?

I hope they know what they are doing. Haley is by all accounts an asshole with a history of alienating players. I hope the front office knows what they are doing (if this is true).

I don’t know how I feel about this (assuming it’s true). I just hope he isn’t as big of an asshole as some people say.

And Neal’s head just exploded

My case for Todd Haley

1) Young enough to commit to the team long-term, experienced enough to do the job (and unlikely to be hired as a HC soon)

2) Has always adapted his scheme and play-calling to the personnel, not the other way around (cough couch Bruce Arians).

3) He’s got attitude. It’ll be the number one complaint, but when was the last time this offense had attitude? When was it last that our identity was to go out and hit the other guy in the teeth?

4) He won’t go soft on Ben. Ben needs more discipline in his game. 2-3 checkdown/throwaways per game would elevate this offense and Ben’s performance. Arians/Fichtner are buddies, he needs a boss.

5) He’s gotten a ton out of young players in previous stints. And this is a very young offense.

Good points! - syrsteelerfan

I think that we need new young blood with an attitude AND experience. We do not need another “buddy” for Ben. We need someone who Ben will listen to as well as respect. Hope that Haley will get that respect – first. Ben had to get the respect of the FO and the fans after his spate of immaturity. He learned humility. He has to do the same for their (FO) selection as OC. It can reap “tremendous” benefits for us and #7 (SB win) next year. We “certainly” have the talent. Ben HAS to stay healthy. Ergo he must put ego aside and play smarter “ala” Brady, Brees and Rodgers and Peyton Manning – if he returns.

he did wonders with Kurt Warner after his career was written off in NY

by NoVAPensFan on Feb 8, 2012 5:29 AM EST up reply actions

Why do people keep saying that? No he didn’t, Kurt just finally recovered from the head and hand injuries he sustained toward the end of his stay in StL

by FrankWyt on Feb 8, 2012 5:39 AM EST up reply actions

probably the biggest reason people keep saying is that because it came straight from Kurt’s mouth. He essentially told the trib that Haley pushed him to get every ounce of production that was left in his tank. When people want to work for him, he’ll work wonders. I don’t understand why people keep hating on Haley. His record as an assistant and as a head coach is actually not that bad

by NoVAPensFan on Feb 8, 2012 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

addendum: his record as an assistant is near stellar and his record as a head coach as actually not that bad

by NoVAPensFan on Feb 8, 2012 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Yes..I always trust that the words out of image conscious athletes like Kurt Warner. His publicist always communicates exactly what he’s thinking, and in no way is trying to take the high road to avoid conflict or controversy.

For the record, my record as an assistant would be stellar too if I had Warner, Fitz, Breaston and Boldin (before he got Flacco’d)

But still, more important to Warners revival is recovering from the head and hand injuries. Bulger had the same thing happen to him.(not the hand, but the head) That’s a product of a Martz system.

I have a feeling that this is either going to be a huge success or a complete disaster

Defined how? What are your criteria of huge success or complete disaster? Either they win the super bowl every year he is OC until he gets promoted to another head coaching position, or they lose every game until he gets fired?

by worldtrip on Feb 6, 2012 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

By huge success I mean the offense consistently finishes in the top 10 in yards and scoring and cuts down on the turnovers

And by complete disaster I mean Haley starts screaming at everyone and everyone starts screaming back, and the locker room gets torn into multiple factions.

The first part is possible. I don’t see any way that Tomlin lets that second part happen.

Welcome, Coach Haley.

I look forward to second guessing you every game, including in the Super Bowl.

my take

1) Could be good or bad.
2) Ben will fall in line or we should cut his @ss The FO stood behind him during his escapades. Ben could be a great QB and cement a place in Canton if he only put the time in studying and training.
3) Someone needs to check on Neal he might jump off the nearest bridge.

This could work out

I would put my feelings as ‘cautious optimism’

I think as an HC, the Haley is too much of a control freak dick that needs to calm the hell down.

But offensively the Chiefs were actually pretty solid last year, and this year were looking good until everybody got hurt. Cassel isn’t half the QB the Ben is but he played pretty well when he had time to throw. They only had one good WR in Dwayne Bowe, and Jamaal Charles blew his ACL out like in week 2.

Perhaps as an OC he’ll be a little more focused on just working with the players instead of trying to win their respect by yelling and being retarded. It’s a much more veteran team that shouldn’t have some of the problems and discipline issues that the KC squad seemed to have.

So we’ll see, I think it’s a decent pickup provided he doesn’t make everybody pissed off. I don’t think he will as OC.

by Mechem on Feb 6, 2012 6:19 PM EST reply actions

I'll say it -

I like the hire!

This offense has alot of great weapons and is in need of some innovation. Granted, i’m with everyone on getting the line shaped up, but i think we’ve been trying the past couple drafts (Pouncey/Gilbert), and it will continue. But i think Ben, the receivers and HEATH will really benefit with Haley.

I’ll take an abrasive personality that gets results over a “Yes man” to the starting qb every time. It’s a done deal, Steeler fans, let’s get on board!

by crosby87 on Feb 6, 2012 6:28 PM EST reply actions

This

Yes, we’re a veteran team with no discipline issues. I also think this falls right in with Tomlins ‘delegation type’ coaching style. With no loyalties to certain players, it’ll be nice to have someone holding BB accountable for the 2-3 boneheaded throws he makes a game. And like someone else said, when is the lasttime we tried to ‘hit someone in the mouth’ offensively….good fit IMHO

I can only imagine

They would do their best to keep Harrison off the podium, even to the point of spurning him of the MVP in favor of Shaun Suisham’s perfect extra point percentage.

You can also say two things:

1) MT is NOT afraid of controversy or strong personalities.
2) It WILL be interesting to watch the Steeler offense next year…unlike this past year.

Give it a chance

I would not have thought Haley three weeks ago any more than anyone else. However, Give the FO their due.

1. How hard did everyone complain when they did not hire Whiz or Grimm as the HC
2. I remember a lot of hand wringing back in the day about Cowher
== now all of a sudden we don’t like someone that shows emotion
== Not Haleys level but Whiz showed emotion on the sideline as well.
3. Looking forward to a few trick plays in the scheme as well. They always worked better than the total improv that Arians likes.
4. In KC other than the RB’s there was not a lot of talent after Bowe as a WR. In Pgh he has to be salavating.

by MrZoot on Feb 7, 2012 7:33 AM EST reply actions

If it works

We could be rolling in Superbowl Champion paraphernalia another couple of times before Ben’s career is over.

Of course Ben could clash with Todd Haley and make Bruce Arians look like forsaken savior. I’m just happy Ben and Bruce didn’t Thelma-and-Louise-it off a Hawaiian volcano. Thanks Indy for hiring Bruce before he could make the trip.

They know what they are doing.

Maybe I am in the bliss that is The Rooney Family, but they have a pretty good track record of hiring the “right man for the job.” Also, I agree with a previous post…He may be a dick, but atleast he is not the head dick.
