Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Was the cheater "cheated" and the "genius" out geniused (if that's a word)?

I was looking around at articles about the Super Bowl, kinda surveying they aftermath and I found something interesting. It was an article right under my nose on SBNation. Someone was thinking along the lines I was.

Star-divide

I was thinking out fortunate the Giants got a penalty for 12 men on the field after an incompletion in the last seconds of the Super Bowl. It only gave up 5 yards and it used up valuable seconds. The extra defender help in coverage so the pass wasn't completed.

Then I ran across the article below. Rather than talk about it here, I'm going to send you there to see what it says. You come back and give your verdict in the poll and comments below.

didnt the giants fake injuries earlier this year in a similar situation this year in the closing minutes?

if so, then we know they arent above doing this sort of thing to help themselves out.

It was on purpose

And it was brilliant

That's what I think

It crossed my mind during the game. I thought “:Wow, that worked out extremely well for the Giants……Hey! No maybe not….”

If it ain't illegal...

That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the NFL make a rule that brings the time back if the penalty is under 2 minutes.

Exactly right

First thing that came to my mind was that this was on purpose. Bring an extra DB in, knock down his long pass, and take the 5 yards while eating up valuable time.

If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying.

What happened to integrity?

It would be one thing if one of the 11 defensive players commited an infraction (offside, illegal formation, etc) either accidently or on purpose, for purposes of gaming the clock.

Its another thing entirely if the coach purposely sends too many players on the field, in a pre-meditated act to violate the rules and take an unfair advantage. That is beneath contempt.

And if the ends justify the means, then be the hypocrites you are in supporting something like this, but forever STFU about Tom Brady “crying” for a penalty flag, or either of the Harbaugh coaches “whining” to the refs about something.

If you can’t play the game within the rules, you have no integrity; without integrity, why bother with the rules.

Or, if you are so fine with such a “creative” way of playing, how about this; a penalty for too many men on the field within the 10 yard line results in a free play for the end zone; how would you feel then if a Steeler player tripped trying to get off the field and we’re flagged for it in a Championship game; would suck if he was legitimately trying to get off the field, but the Steelers just handed their opponent 6 points all because people became so supportive of cheating that the penalties had to be enlarged to deter it.

Either the penalties now have to be adjusted to make such cheating too painful to risk, or the game goes to hell via such dumbass rules as the Brady Rule, the Heinz Ward rule, and the ever popular H2H definitions that cover only the QBs.

What you are clapping about, and supporting, only serves to further erode and destroy the game you claim to love.

to be fair,

they only would have to change the rule so the clock is reset to to the point of the start of the play in this case. there isnt really much point in overreacting here.

by hasay on Feb 7, 2012 8:19 AM EST up reply actions

You looking at this wrong
but forever STFU about Tom Brady "crying" for a penalty flag, or either of the Harbaugh coaches "whining" to the refs about something.

This is completely different than that. This is more comparable to at the end of the basketball game where the team intentially fouls the other team and send them to the free throw line in hopes they miss in order to have a chance of winning. This isn’st asking for a flag or whining this is intentially sending 12 men out of the field in hopes to ‘shorten’ the game. You get a penalty and you accept that. Does the team at the end of a basketball game have no integrity for fouling at the end?

Or, if you are so fine with such a "creative" way of playing, how about this; a penalty for too many men on the field within the 10 yard line results in a free play for the end zone; how would you feel then if a Steeler player tripped trying to get off the field and we’re flagged for it in a Championship game

I would feel like the person who needed to get off the field should have never been on it. See there is a difference here because there is no excuse for not knowing when you shouldn’t be on the field. I’m not going to get mad at the penalty for something that a player should know and has the ability to control.

Either the penalties now have to be adjusted to make such cheating too painful to risk, or the game goes to hell via such dumbass rules as the Brady Rule, the Heinz Ward rule, and the ever popular H2H definitions that cover only the QBs.

Completely different rules here, H2H is a good rule, its the way they implement them makes it out of the players’ control which is why its a bad, the brady rule – I’m fine with its about how they implement them, you shouldn’t be able to dive at a QB legs, its when they call it when you just grab and hold the leg is bothers me, the Hines Ward rule is just dumb though but still this isn’t the situation we’re talking about. We’re talking about using a rule to your advantage. Its completely different.

What you are clapping about, and supporting, only serves to further erode and destroy the game you claim to love.

No it doesn’t, this doesn’t destroy nor erode the game, all it does it make it so if you get a 12 men penalty they issue the yardage and start the clock over. No big deal.

I love the Steelers.

Football isn't basketball...

…just like it isn’t soccer, and just as football fans hate to see players “flop” like they do in soccer, there is no history of purposely committing penalties in football as it is accepted in basketball

This is really confusing to me.

You actually believe that it isn’t ethical to manipulate the rules in your favor? And you think this while working in the position you do? Anything having to do with capitalism and investments is gaming the system. If you don’t find the loopholes and complexities, you aren’t doing it right.

It sure sounds like you think you are the moral yardstick with these things by lofting accusations of players and coaches being beneath contempt, and calling others hypocrites. It’s a bit over the top. You are really overreacting on this one. It would be a lack of integrity if the coach didn’t do everything within the rules to win the game, even if it means gaming them. Both coaches have the same option, so it’s NOT an unfair advantage. It just so happened that it favored the giants in this particular situation.

And if you think players in today’s professional sports don’t “flop”, then you haven’t ever watched the NBA, NHL, NFL (on every roughing the punter penalty, ever.) or even MLB when players yell at the umps after pretending to swipe at the bag stealing second when it was clear they were a mile off. Players game the rules all the time, it’s part of the game. It’s nothing less than naive to think otherwise. If they tried to play with 12 players and did everything to get away with it, then THAT would be without integrity, and cheating.

I actually think it was a happy accident for the giants, mostly blaming Brady, but he had no choice. Wait for the defender to get off the field to snap the ball to preserve time, but you waste precious seconds waiting at the end of the game. You snap the ball to save time and you get hit with a penalty on the defense which causes you to lose seconds.

It was a catch 22 for the pats, but if the Giants were smart enough to think of it, more power to ’em.

by IronJake on Feb 11, 2012 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

Could have been a mistake

the Patriots got called for having too many men on the field at an earlier point in the game. and the giants were also called for having too many men in the huddle on offense also.

Mike Golic brought this up in yesterday's Mike n Mike's radio program.

When Buddy Ryan was the Eagles HC and Golic was on the D-Line, Golic said that Ryan would routinely suggest this strategy given the situation presented itself.

Given that….I’m inclined to think the G-Men did this on purpose. Great move given the situation.

However, the Patsies are often in/out of the no huddle and were doing it frequently on that last drive. Perhaps the G-men got caught in a personnel change when the Pats were in no huddle.

Bottom line, we’ll never know for sure….but fun to speculate.
So I picked Redman :)

If you actually watch the video...

in particular, the first two seconds of the video, you’ll see Justin Tuck at the top of the screen at the 45 yard line, running off the field holding his helmet in his hand, but not able to get off the field before the snap. That’s your 12th man. Not exactly helping in pass coverage when he’s standing on the sideline before Brady completes his drop.

This just a no-fact tempest in an internet teapot.

Also, the entourage she was traveling with suggests she knows she’s being followed by paparazzi constantly, so she was well aware her comments were going to be recorded. I don’t buy the innocent “standing by my hubby” excuse. She could have done that by just saying Brady played as best he could, and not even mention welker.

What it does tell me, is that Brady probably discussed it with her, and insinuated that it was welkers fault they lost, but I’m guessing just like you are.

It certainly was NOT a private moment. She had absolutely no expectation of privacy when you travel with photographers, especially after the super bowl when your husband just lost as QB.

what everyone is forgetting ?

Is that the offense needs to be alert to the situation. Like the return kicker counts how many head hunters are coming after him, so does the quarterback need to count the defenders when precious seconds are left. Brady could very well have spiked the ball.
