As I sit here today, reading all of the wonderful stories and tributes to Hines Ward, I've tried to come up with my own way of showing my love and appreciation to this great football player. After spending the day thinking about this, I've decided to order a Ward jersey to wear for the 2012 season and beyond. This is not something I do lightyly. I only own one jersey, #58 for my favorite player of all time, Jack Lambert. In fact, that is the only professional jersey that I have ever worn. I toyed with the idea of ordering one for a current player, even seeking input from my fellow BTSC readers, but never made the plunge. Now, today, I am the proud owner of a second Steeler jersey, that of Hines Ward. In my humble view, Ward, like Lambert before him, played the game the way it is meant to be played, with an insane intensity that results in his bone-jarring (and sometimes breaking) blocks. I've seen and read a lot of great tributes to Hines today, but none that allowed me to make a statement about his being cut. So, my way of telling the Rooneys, the NFL, and anyone else that may be interested, that I love Hines Ward for the man and football player that he is, is to order his jersey after he's been cut. For me, it makes sense, because he will always be a Steeler and I'll wear the jersey proudly. He lived up to the ideal of what I hope to see in each and every Steeler by playing every play with pride, passion, and a sense of loyalty to his teammates.
