Free agency has been upon us for 2 weeks now, and we have all heard about the big money being thrown around to big name players. With the exception of the Steelers releasing several veterans, it has been a quiet off-season for them in terms players obtained (nothing out of the ordinary). However, upon attending West Virginia's pro day, coach Tomlin and Kevin Colbert were highly impressed by the HB/TE Will Johnson. At a ripped 240 pounds, Johnson benched 225 for 30 reps, ran a 4.49 40, and apparently looked very impressive running routes. The exciting part? They already signed him!
He used up his eligibility and did not get drafted last year, but apparently worked very hard to come back in the best shape of his life (just the type of guys we need). Being the geniuses our HC and GM are, they gave this kid the chance of a life time and threw in another hardworking, talented player into the ring. Between Weslye Saunders, David Johnson, and now Will Johnson, it looks like were going to see some nice competition in camp for that no. 2 TE spot! So the moral of the story? While all these other teams unload there wallets on free agents, we get to watch the best organization in football use their "Money Ball" approach and swoop up potential gems like these at a next to nothing cost. Gotta love Steeler footall!
