Place Kickers – Under-valued or simply under-emphasized?

I certainly don’t claim to be the most knowledgeable football fan, but I am without a doubt a die-hard, black & gold bleeding maniacal fan of the greatest sports organization in the world, our beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.

I have been somewhat puzzled by the lack of interest and/or discussion pertaining to the place kicking situation that the Steelers find themselves in. Although I’ve read some mock drafts with a quality prospect being taken in the 7th round, I’ve witnessed just as many, or maybe more with no kicker being selected in the draft at all. While I realize this may be due to the belief that there will be quality options to chose from post-draft, I can’t help but wonder why the position seems to be rarely discussed on this site as well as others that I frequent.

According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, the top 29 scoring leaders in the history of the franchise are, you guessed it; kickers. How many heart-pounding, palm-sweating moments have we as Steeler fans had to endure when tightly contested games have come down to a last minute (or last second) field goal to decide the outcome? And how many playoff positions have we lost due to Skippy’s decline and Suisham’s inconsistent performance of the recent past? While I have no official numbers to answer those questions, it certainly seems to me it has been a substantial amount.

I’m not advocating spending a high draft pick on a place kicker, but it’s my belief that there could be few better investments than spending a 7th rounder, or even a 6th in extreme cases where there is seemingly (I emphasize seemingly because we all know there’s no such thing as a “sure thing”, so no flaming please ;) a can’t miss prospect that could put points on the board and potentially win games in the last minutes for the next 10-12 years.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, go Steelers!!
