Hard to believe but just a few months ago, Vontaze Burfict was regarded as the finest middle linebacker in this year's draft and a legitimate candidate (if he somehow fell that far) for the Steelers' first round pick.
My how things have changed. Burfict developed weight problems in his senior year at ASU and then absolutely failed at the combine. He ran his 40 like an OT and generally looked fat, lazy and disinterested in Indianapolis.
Rarely has such a talent fallen that far that fast. To put icing on the cake, the boob tested positive for marijuana usage at the Combine.
So what's my point? Now that we got our guy at #1, do we take a look at Burfict anywhere in draft? Before you all point to his Combine performance, I remind you that people were jumping off the Dontari Poe bandwagon in droves under the rationale that the combine doesn't matter that much . . . saying instead that performance on the field matters. In that regard, Burfict is the anti-Poe.
My two cents: If we don't get a quality ILB in round #2 (I'm looking at you Mychal Kendricks), I think the risk-reward balance comes into equlibrium somewhere in early Round 4. But plenty of people out there are saying the kid is plain undraftable. But I promise someone will take a shot at him in the draft.
And you say?
