I'm really excited this season for a number of reasons. The latest reason for optimism.....Special Teams. This year there has been a lot of turnover. No more Hoke, Farrior, Gay, Keomautu, Starks, Smith and sadly Hines. Most of our tender offers were signed and we had a great draft. I think sometimes when you have a veteran team it's hard to hold on to those 2nd string guys, heck even some practice squad talent.
With the addition of Rainey and Spence, punt rush might actually block a kick for the first time that I can remember. Actually it was a few years back in Washington, I was lucky enought to see it in person. Rainey will probably return most, but not always.
Kapinos should have gotten the nod over Sepulveda last year. They had virtually the same average and Dan cost us a 3rd round pick and couldn't stay healthy. Suisham has proven to be fairly consistant and the moving up of kickoffs has limited his liability. I think we have rookie kicker in camp who sounds promising and competition always helps at that spot.
Then throw in Brown, Mundy, and Allen as guys with experience and I'm feeling better about the whole deal. Field position will be huge for Pittsburgh this year with all the changes, and Special Teams might be a strength after years of being such a disaster.
