Is it officially time to change our defensive coordinator? Yes, he was an innovator of defense and the father of the zone blitz scheme but reputation can only get you so far. I have loved having him as our defensive coordinator and coach dad has given us two super bowl rings and a great defense for almost a decade now but his schemes need to be revamped to fit this new pass oriented league.
I think it is finally time to have Kieth Butler step into his defensive coordinator spot that is his. He has patiently waited the past several years and has even turned down several chances to be a defensive coordinator. I am not overreacting to the loss yesterday (it still stings) but his end of game schemes are not working. Quarterbacks know they can dink and dunk their way down the field just like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have done in years past.
The reason for this, I guess, rant is because look at the Cardinals or Pittsburgh West. Ray Horton who we were glad he left after we were entranced by the "Lake Effect" last year. I am a full believer in the Lake Effect but Ray Horton a protégé of Coach Dad has turned the Cardinals into a strong defense in a year. We have the same amount if not more playmakers on our team. What is the difference? Horton has taken Lebeau's philosophy and has retuned it to fit today's game. I image Kieth Butler will do the same as he has studied under Lebeau and will bring some of that swagger and nastiness back into our once vaunting defense.
I am not asking for Lebeau’s head on a plate and asking him to be fired in the next few days. I think Tomlin should give more control of the defense to Butler and eventually slowly faze Coach Dad out. At the end of the year he should be sent off the way any person in the NFL would want to be, with a nice shiny trophy.
Quick point….Rooney said that the reason for Arian’s “retirement” was Arians was thinking about the retirement the previous years. Hasn’t Lebeau been contemplating retirement every year? First post but long time reader so take it easy.
