For those of you not old enough to remember, Jim 'Crash' Jensen was one of the first 'slash' or 'unique' players in the NFL. A Quarterback in College, he was an 11th round pick to Miami back in 1981. 2 Years later, Miami drafted Dan Marino. Jensen's time as a QB was going to be limited. He became a Special Teams Player as well as a Tight End (HB as the designation of today's players) and a Possession Receiver. He could also be called on as the Emergency QB.
Given the nickname of 'Crash' by Howard Cosell (for being a QB making tackles on Special teams), Jensen became the ultimate Utility Player (baseball term). Good at most, but not great at one thing, Jensen played 12 seasons for the Dolphin, many of those as the personal 3rd back and safety valve for Marino...
Fast Forward 20-some years and Here lies Tim Tebow... A Quarterback not good enough to start. A good athlete but not spectacular, The New York Jets toyed with him as a Special Teamer and a Gimmick Player. But he made very little 'splash' plays and looks to be cast off and cut by the Jets in the near future. Jacksonville, his hometown, has made no qualms about not taking Tebow as a QB... Tebow looks to be lost... but...
Is Tim Tebow a good QB? No...
Can he be? Yes but with lots of time and money spent...
Could he be a good NFL player? Yes...
What role does he play? The 'Crash' Role
Here's the Catch - What Team takes him?
Find a team with a Veteran Quarterback or two (Big Ben and/or Charlie Batch), A Steady Coaching and Front Office (Tomlin, Colbert, Rooney), Opportunity (Heath Miller on IR, 3 Free Agent RB's, Little Depth at TE or FB) and more importantly, Patience... (Time to Learn his new role and Practice on being a better player- QB or Not)
Will it Happen? Probably not...
But would it hurt to kick the tires for a minimum salary with incentivized bonuses on someone who you know won't be a problem in the locker room or the public eye?
I used to see #13 and #11 in the Shotgun on 3rd Down for the Dolphins... Why not #7 and #15?
Just throwing it out there...
