I was looking over the salary cap situation and an idea occurred to me, but I don't know if it is something that can be done or not...
If you take a player such as Troy, who has 2 years left on his contract, can the Steelers offer him an extension of another year or two and carry some of his salary over as a bonus in 2015? The last year could be backloaded with non-guaranteed money and the modest guaranteed signing bonus, which was carried over from 2013 and 2014. I think this would be a good move if he plans on playing that long, because it will guarantee he finishes his career in Pittsburgh.
The same could be done with Ben. He's under contract until 2015, and will still be in the Steeler's plans (pending disaster) for a couple more years.
I'm not sure if this is something that would work or not.
