Kevin Colbert made it know in his press conference today that the Steelers are married to no upcoming free agents. That has me curious to know which players the team will really prioritize this offseason. How our free agency period works will most likely affect who we heavily target come draft time. Even though the Steelers do not draft on need, I find it hard to believe that we won't take a long look at some positions where our need meets value. Here are my thoughts on free agency.
Unrestricted Free Agents:
Keenan Lewis: I have to think this is a top priority for the Steelers. Keenan Lewis has had a rollercoaster ride of a career since being drafted by Pittsburgh in the 3rd round back in 2009. With that said, he has really came on strong this season and solidified himself as possibly the top corner on our team. He excelled in LeBeau's defense and should be one of the top free agent corner backs on the market. He would be best suited to stay in the Black and Gold because of the defensive "fit" for him. See Bryant McFadden when he left for Arizona. It will be tough to keep him, but after watching Ryan Clark and Ike Taylor's free agent tours, I think the Steelers can find a way to retain him to a decent contract for both sides.
Verdict: Resigned.
Ramon Foster: I also believe that Foster will be a top priority for the Steelers. Considering his style of play and reliablity since he has been with the Steelers, he will command some attention in the free agent market. Though the Steelers have drafted a potential star in DeCastro, Willie Colon still remains a question mark. Colon started his tenure with the Steelers as one of the most durable players on the roster, but now that has all changed. Foster is an above average starter that can play on a variety of positions along the offensive front. Unless the Steelers feel that confident in Beachem moving inside and Colon lasting a whole season, Foster should be greatly pursued by the organization. I think that Foster will ultimately remain a Steeler.
Verdict: Resigned.
Mike Wallace: Ah, the player that everyone is interested in. I think that Wallace has made it clear that he doesn't care to take a hometown discount by forgoing the contract last season that was offered, thus it being passed to Antonio Brown. In addition, interview after interview has yielded quotes that suggest that Mike will do what is best for him, financially speaking. I think Wallace is a great player with a good number of years and plays ahead of him, but he isn't worth a $60+ million contract that he is seeking. He had a rough season this past season and likely won't command the value he might have last season, but I think a team like Miami or even New England will make a run at him. I believe he walks.
Verdict: Leaves.
Rashard Mendenhall: There is no doubt that Mendenhall is one of the better backs in the NFL, but he is a headcase. The ordeal with Twitter coupled with the issues of not showing up for games is enough to let him walk. I do, however, believe that he should have been in the rotation a lot more than he was this season, but his conduct is indicative of his attitude. Colbert has made it known that he is not only upset with Mendenhall, but the whole running back group. I believe he walks and there is no after-thought about it.
Verdict: Leaves.
Casey Hampton: Hampton brings value here in that he is still a big body on the defensive front. He has obviously eroded in terms of play, but he knows the system well and can still make a few splash plays. It will be sad to see him retire, as he was and is a great Steeler, but I believe he has at least one more season left in him, but not with the Black and Gold. McLendon is coming on, making him less of a factor. It is hard to predict because it can go either way, but I think he goes.
Verdict: Leaves.
Larry Foote: He has a decent, not great, season with the Steelers. He has great leadership skills and can make the tackles needed. With the uncertainty at the ILB outside of Timmons, I believe he is brought back at the vet minimum.
Verdict: Resigned.
David Johnson: Johnson is a great run blocker and a has good hands, but I think he is expendable at this point. Coming off major ACL surgery, and the emergence of Will Johnson.. I think he is let go.
Verdict: Leaves.
Will Allen: We need safety depth. Allen played well and would play for a small contract. He is kept.
Verdict: Resigned.
Byron Leftwich: Too injury prone. I believe that was evident to all of America and then some, after this season. He is let go.
Verdict: Leaves.
Charlie Batch: Man does he always hang in there. Just as soon as everyone writes him off, he is back in action. I think this really is his final season, and he is resigned for 1 year at the vet minimum.
Verdict: Resigned.
Ryan Mundy: Mundy is weak. I think Cromartie-Smith and company have more potential than him. He is expendable.
Verdict: Leaves.
Legursky: Legursky is a rock-solid back-up center. He can spot play at guard and is valuable for what he does. He needs to be and will be retained.
Verdict: Resigned.
Max Starks: Unfortunately, I think another team will sign him away. He is a good starter in the NFL, and the Steelers have stocked for the future in Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert. I want him here, but I have a gut feeling someone will take him away.
Verdict: Leaves.
Leonard Pope: That was a nice experiment. Gone.
Verdict: Leaves.
Brandon Johnson: Gone. No real value here.
Verdict: Leaves.
Plaxico Burress: He leaves. He is nothing more than a redzone threat and I think he would like to be more. \
Verdict: Leaves.
Issac Redman: This is also a tough one to predict because he has been nothing more than a mediocre running back with much higher expectations. He has really disappointed. SteelerNation was all about him because of goal line drills in training camp 3 years ago, but it is sad to say that he isn't as great as he was made out to be. With that said, I think he stays as the 3rd running back (we draft our starter this year).
Verdict: Resigned.
