The PBS documentary League of Denial was on the other night. The concussion and its affect on the players who suffer from CTE was the subject Quite a lot of the doc focused on Pittsburgh, Mike Webster and the Allegheny County Coroner's office. If you hadn't already figured out why the NFL settled with the class action on CTE, this makes it obvious. Documentation of concussions causing CTE goes back twenty years. If the NFL had to testify under oath about the documents reviewed in the film, the jury would have awarded a whole lot more than 750 million.
The NFL is really no worse than any other corporation in our capitalistic society They are devious, deceitful, self serving and when faced with litigation dishonest. Think of Monsanto and GMO, Exxon and fracking, BP and off shore drilling, Apple and Chinese factory workers, and so on. Of course their best course of action is to buy influence with the Congress and no one has our elected officials in their pocket deeper than the NFL.
It was stated in the film that if 10 percent of Mom's in the US refused to let their sons play football, the NFL would be extinct in 20 years. I'm not sure about this, but I do have a daughter and son in law who have guided my grandson into soccer and basketball as team sports. Although the whole family is Steeler fans, my grandson expresses no interest in playing tackle football. I have always been okay with that and after watching this doc I am even more so.
I have enough footballl injuries that I suffer from and I'm wondering if multiple knockouts contribute to my memory issues. My wife says if I get Alzheimers no one will know. I will always be a Steelers fan, but changes are coming.
