Isn't it great getting to watch Ravens at Steelers, arguably the best rivalry in the NFL even if our teams are rumored to be down due to their early season records. One benefit of the Steelers 1-4 start is taking the pressure of the game off of this fan. It's been a long time since I haven't felt some anxiety when watching the Steelers play. Since Ben won one for the thumb, I have pretty much expected the Steelers to win another one every season and have been quick to express said belief early and often.
This season as the team started slowly out of the box, it was really hard on the guy with great expectations, I believe I described myself as acting like a baby at one point of self realization. So you kinda get the picture of the meltdown. My dreams die hard.
And by doing so I came to realize that after all it is only a game. No matter how much of myself I may put on the line in wanting a win it most likely has no affect on the actual outcome of the game.
So this afternoon we will be heading to a local sports bar and I will be rocking my Franco jersey hoping to run into more fanatics such as myself. I will cheer even louder than I did last Sunday when I tried a new sports bar for the noon game, the crowd was mostly church elderly. I didn't want to startle anyone with my usual loudness but they should be gone by the late afternoon start today.
Without the pressure and without the great expectations I will relax and enjoy the game. If the Steelers lose, hey, it helps their drafting position, right? If the win, can I objectively say they still have any real likelihood of making the playoffs? Most would probably say not, so for the first time in a very long time, I am gonna relax and enjoy a Steelers game for the game itself without so much worry and concern for the outcome.
It should be a really fun afternoon watching the game.
