Funeral for L.C. Greenwood 11 a.m. Monday

Darryl Norenberg-US PRESSWIRE

The funeral for Steelers legend L.C. Greenwood is set for 11 a.m. Monday. The Post-Gazette ran an excerpt from Gary Pomerantz's soon-to-be-released biography, "Their Life's Work," highlighting Greenwood and the relationship he had with the team.

Former Steelers defensive end L.C. Greenwood's funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday at Pentecostal Temple COGIC, 6300 E. Liberty Blvd. in Pittsburgh. The Post-Gazette ran an excerpt from "Their Life's Work: The Brotherhood of the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers, Then and Now," a book by Gary M. Pomerantz that will be released Oct. 29.

Greenwood passed away from kidney failure Sunday, Sept. 29 - during the Steelers' loss to the Vikings in Week 4. His death leaves just "Mean" Joe Greene as the sole survivor of the famed "Steel Curtain" defensive line of the Steelers in the 1970s.

Behind The Steel Curtain will have a full review of Pomerantz's book this week, including an interview with the author. It's not a stretch to say it's the most thorough, comprehensive and encapsulating piece of literature on the topic, and it's a fantastic read for any football fan - obviously and especially Steelers fans.

Greenwood's passing is sad, and Pomerantz goes to great detail in explaining why, in an eerie way, considering Greenwood's death came well after the completion of this book. His three and a half year "labor of love," as he told me, resulted in over 400 interviews, leaving no stone untouched in pursuit of the creation of the story of the Steelers' franchise - with an emphasis on the human side of the Steel Curtain, not just their success.

The full review will be published this week, leading into the Steelers' Week 6 game against the Jets.

At the risk of going off-schedule in this post, I've rarely been this excited to publish an article.
