Rumor: Could Beanie Wells end up in Pittsburgh?

USA TODAY Sports

The free agency rumor mill is under way, as one source has linked Beanie Wells with the Steelers and Bengals.

The Steelers have allegedly expressed interest in running back Beanie Wells, but might be facing competition from AFC North rival Cincinnati. Wells was selected in the first round of the 2009 draft, but never lived up to expectations in Arizona and was released yesterday after rarely being healthy.

Another big, heavy back with a penchant for getting dinged up missing games seems like the last thing the Steelers need right now after giving tenders to both Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman, so let's again stress that this is just a rumor right now.

Wells' best season was 2011 where he rushed for 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns. Not terribly impressive numbers, but better than anything the Steelers currently have on the roster. The Steelers are continuing their search for a feature back, and true to form could be looking for one man’s trash to plug needs if the price is right.

Wells has a career average of 4.0 yards per carry, but has only played a 16 game season once, his rookie year. Last year he was only able to appear in 8 games last year after missing the first half of the season with a toe injury. After returning, he only put up 2.7 yards per carry, but 5 touchdowns.

Anything is possible though if Wells is willing to play for a very cheap, incentive-laden contract.
