NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport is reporting via Twitter the Steelers are hosting tight end Kellen Davis on a prospective free agent trip to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers are in a tenuous position in regards to the tight end position. Heath Miller tore his ACL in the Steelers' Week 17 win over the Browns, and, barring a miracle recovery, can't be expected to be fully healthy come the start of training camp.
A move for a tight end, whether in free agency or the draft, wouldn't be a surprise. Nor is it surprising the Steelers are talking to Davis. He was linked to the Steelers last year before re-signing with the Bears.
The new regime in Chicago found two of their tight ends, Davis and former Steeler Matt Spaeth, looking for work.
Davis played nearly every snap for the Bears in 2012, and had 19 catches, but with a shockingly low percentage of passes caught to his 44 targets. He had two touchdowns as well.
