The idea of taking a quarterback late in this draft and grooming him to be the starter after the Big Ben era ends has been floating around Steeler nation. I, for one, have been mostly against this idea. It is unlikely that the Steelers would take a QB prospect anywhere above round 5 and late round QB picks like Omar Jacobs and Dennis Dixon have been absolute flops. Taking a QB like Dysert or Renfree in the sixth round just seems like a waste of a pick to me. Therefore, if the Steelers do decide that this is the year the look for the heir apparent to Big Ben's throne, they need to look to draft a QB earlier. Obviously the Steelers going for a QB in round 1 or 2 is out of the question; there are simply too many holes and much bigger long term needs. However, there is one QB I would take if he slips to round 3: EJ Manuel. While it may just be a pipe dream that he falls this far, I think this could be a good fit. He is a big mobile quarterback who struggles with accuracy and reading defenses. These two problems can be worked on working under Ben for a few years. I believe he can be molded to be a starting quarterback in this league and Ben Roethlisberger would be the best role model for him. The main argument against this will be that we need to use our third round pick on a player who won't start for a few years. However, I think alot of us fans are unwilling to admit that we will be able to fix all our holes in this draft. There is no way we can fix our OLB, ILB ,WR, RB, OL, CB, and S holes in this draft. This is the first time in a long time that I am coming to the realization that we might not be fighting for a playoff spot this year. The Steelers are not known for turning draft picks into instant starters so I would not be surprised if this is a draft to rebuild so that we can compete for a title in 2 or 3 years. I think EJ Manuel is an intriguing though, but I would not complain if we look to fill a different hole.
