Being a fan of the best franchise in the NFL is awesome, but it does have its downsides. One of those downsides being we never get the joy of picking up a top 10 player in the draft like Browns fans get to experience every year. Thanks to an unusually bad year by our standards we may have a chance to get the type of player that is usually way our of our reach. One of those types of players we usually dont get is an elite left tackle. This may be the year we can finally grab that guy who can protect Bens blindside for the rest of his career.
Unfortunately for us, having a sucky season is no where near as bad as other teams sucky seasons so we still only ended up with the 17th pick for this year. However we may be in striking distance of trading up to get a pretty dang good left tackle. I realize we already have Gilbert (insert injuring the rest of the o-line jokes here) and Adams on our roster, but I dont believe either of these guys are really a sure thing to be a good LT in the NFL and an upgrade would always be nice at one of the most important positions in the NFL. So with that I present the following trade.
We trade our first and second round picks in this draft and our third in next years draft in exchange for the Tennessee Titans No.10 pick in this years draft. And now using that pick.
1ST ROUND Eric Fisher - Tackle - Central Michigan
Frankly, my whole inspiration for this idea was reading the newest SB Nation mock draft. They had Fisher slipping all the way to the Chargers. I dont really think Fisher will last this long anyways, but it is always fun to speculate. Yes, we did give up a lot to get this pick, so much I really dont know if I think this would really be a good idea, but consider we should recieve a pretty nice compensatory pick for Mike Wallace next year to make up for us losing our third next year.
3RD ROUND Robert Lester - Safety - Alabama
Lester played in the talented SEC conference and I think he should be able to transition over quickly to the NFL in our complex defensive scheme. I think he is a much better player than his draft position will select and we should be able to get a solid player from him.
That is as far as I can mock for now. I am not sure if trading up this much is really something we should do, but I wanted to throw this scenario out anyways. Fisher very well may be long gone before then, in that case just put Lane Johnson in Fishers place, but honestly I like Fisher a lot more.
