Objective Big Boards - 2nd/3rd Round

So my knowledge of players is woefully lacking somewhere after the mid-2nd round, so I've taken a look at the NFL best players available. In this post, I attempt to look at the Steeler's perspective in as objective a manner as possible. I also try to identify the remaining needs and quantify them. Have a look!

So this list has 65 players ranked by their arbitrary NFL.com grades. Let's take some logic to this list and adjust their grades based on the Steelers' perspective and needs:

Let's order the Steelers' needs from weakest to strongest: K, P, QB, OL, OLB, DL, TE, CB, S, ILB, RB, WR.

K, P, and QB all have locked in starters and we don't have urgent need for backups. To account for this, I'm downgrading their grades by 10%.

OL and OLB all have starters pencilled in - there's room for a high level replacement but as a whole we are happy with who we've got/we have already addressed these needs. OLB was just filled by Jarvis Jones - we have room for a backup rusher but he won't see as much of the field. Drop grades by 2% for OL and 1% for OLB.

DL and CB- we are mostly happy with DL. I think Heyward passes Hood on the depth chart and plays next to McLendon and Keisel. Keisel is getting old and we should think about a depth replacement, so this is a "basic level" need. No grade adjustment. We are also mostly happy with CB - Ike is still a good starter for a little bit and Cortez has shown potential to move up to second starter. Gay is a decent nickel corner but we still have to pick up another corner for the future. This is a 1% grade increase.

TE is interesting - we don't have a need since Heath is locked in, but adding a TE is another receiving option, and we need those. Furthermore, Heath is injured. A competent fill in starter is a good option. 1% need increase.

S and ILB - we have good starters who are aging or injured often. Troy and Clark are playing at NFL starter level and can play it for a while longer, but we need a safety of the future and this is a need. At ILB, we have Timmons and Foote - Timmons is playing at starter level but Foote is close to replacement level. We need to start grooming a Mike linebacker as soon as possible. Safety is a 2% upgrade, ILB is 3%.

RB and WR - we have Jonathan Dwyer, Isaac Redman, and Baron Batch at RB right now. These guys haven't shown enough to be starters. However, this class isn't particularly talented, and Dwyer/Redman have flashed the ability to carry the load. This need upgrades RB grades by 4%. We have a decent receiver in Sanders (who's on a one year contract) and a good receiver in Brown. Behind them, we have Plax and Cotchery. So we also need to get a wide receiver - this is a 5% need.

Taking these adjustments into account, here's the top 65 players.

Some analysis -

I don't understand the NFL.com's mancrush on Gio Bernard. I don't think he's better than Lacy at all. In my book, he should be right next to Joseph Randle, so I'd adjust his value to be about 80.

Local mancrushes in Arthur Brown, John Cyprien, Keenan Allen are well justified. There's loads of talent available to help us at our big needs WR, RB, ILB, and S - I'm mad jealous of the teams who hoarded 2nd round picks (cough cough Patriots cough cough)

If every team ahead of us takes the player we want most (ie if all of the teams ahead of us take 1-16 on our personal draft board, we'd end up with Johnthan Banks, which is actually a pretty good pick for round 2. If every team used NFL.com's board, we'd end up with Robert Woods, also a really good pick.

Looking forward to the 2nd round tonight. Comments on the above?
