I have been going back and forth the past couple of days reading draft scouting reports, reviews, and comments. From what I can gather.. the Nation as a whole doesn't like the Landry Jones, Bell, or really even the Jarvis Jones picks. All I have to say is that I am glad that I do not have to scout players for a living.. thus et the fate of the Steelers rest in the worthy hands of the Front Office in Pittsburgh. After seeing so many times the players that have been highly touted bust and overlooked players explode... I am convinced that scouting reports and draft rankings can only get you so far. I will give you a few examples.. I remember Mel Kiper saying that JaMarcus Russell was the next John Elway. Enough said on that. Dumb group think moved Ray Lewis lower than he should have been drafted because he was "undersized". Heck, I didn't know who Antonio Brown or Cortez Allen were when they were drafted.. thank God no one else took time to notice!
When it comes to this year's draft, we got to look objectively. The Steelers have begun address their most pressing needs. We needed a feature running back, and time will tell if Bell is that guy (he sure has the track record to be). We filled out OLB depth, CB depth with Keenan's departure, WR depth, and QB depth. We got a potential star in Shamarko Thomas.
The Steelers addressed the need for leaders on the team. With a team that craves leadership in the locker room, it was needed. Jones, Bell, and Thomas were well known leaders on their teams and have shown a track record of character. The intangibles are not spoken enough when scouting is concerned.. you gotta have it. No one likes the choir boy analogy and that is understandable. However, I would say having heart and character can take you much further than talent can. You know where these guy's hearts are.. and they are in football.
When it comes to this years draft class.. do not look to much into these "grades", "reports", and the questions surrounding the class. Let the players do what they do on the field and then determine the class. I have put too much stock into the draft rankings and they always let me down. I, for one, am excited for the new talent on the roster. Very much ready for the season! Go Steelers!
