Steelers sign rookie receiver Justin Brown

Michael C. Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The Steelers continue to sign members of their latest draft class prior to the expected June 1st date, as they ink the sixth-rounder out of Oklahoma.

The Pittsburgh Steelers front-office continues to take care of business, signing another draft pick to his rookie contract.

Justin Brown, one of the team's two sixth-round selections, began his collegiate career with the Penn State Nittany Lions, but ended up with the Oklahoma Sooners where he was a primary target for fifth-round draft pick, Landry Jones.

Brown makes the third rookie contract signed today, following Terry Hawthorne and Markus Wheaton. Many expected Pittsburgh to wait until June 2nd, when $5.5 million will come off of the salary cap ledger thanks to Willie Colon's release back in March. Instead, the Steelers are signing as many rookies as they can with the room they have to work with now, thanks to the rules of displacement which allow these new deals to basically hit the cap for pennies on the dollar at this point of the off-season.

Brown will be competing against Wheaton, and the team's entrenched veterans, vying for a shot at a roster spot - at least on the practice squad.

Rookies expected to remain unsigned until after June 1st are outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, and possibly running back Le'Veon Bell.
