Steelers Injury Report: Cortez Allen, DeMarcus Van Dyke sidelined with 'minor, camp-like injuries'

Ronald Martinez

Injuries are part of the game, and being injured is part of the process, says Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. The absence of Allen and Van Dyke gives some additional reps for a deep cornerback group.

Certainly, there are teams right now that would love to describe the injuries of their players as "minor" and "camp-like," as Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did after Sunday's training camp practice session.

Cornerback Cortez Allen had "some knee discomfort," and DeMarcus Van Dyke injured his left hamstring toward the end of practice, Tomlin having said they haven't had a chance to fully evaluate him.

A rash of significant injuries around the league, including the season-ending ailments suffered by Baltimore's Dennis Pitta and Denver's Dan Koppen have kept the league on edge, fans trying to remain hopeful the same fate doesn't strike their team.

But Tomlin, running his seventh camp as the Steelers' head coach, understands it's a part of the game.

"That is part of this preseason team building process. We will deal with it. One man’s misfortune creates opportunities for others. We’ll treat it as such. We’ll expect guys to absorb those snaps."

Those guys would likely be William Gay and Curtis Brown, listed as the primary back-ups, but this early into camp, the loads of everyone there should be increased a little bit.

The Steelers practice in pads at 12:55 p.m. Monday.
