As many of us who live and breathe Pittsburgh sports know, while the rest of the world prepares to change seasons, our seasons, ours look a bit different. Most people have Spring, summer, Fall and Winter... For us it's Baseball, Football, Hockey and The Playoffs.
I'm one of those people whose world has gotten a little busier now that the puck has dropped in the Penguins preseason. For the last 20 years, I haven't had to worry about whether I should watch the Bucs, Pucks or Steelers. The Steelers were the boys of Fall in Pittsburgh for a reason: the Pirates never gave us a lot to cheer about this time of year. Well tonight, that all changes.
You see, I'm one of 'those people' that never stopped wearing my Pirates gear during their little 'slump'. 20 years is a long time to have people question your mental health for supporting a team that looks like they may at least break .500 and all they end up doing is breaking your heart. When the finger points (usually followed by intense laughter) came, my response was always the same: I'm no quitter.
So now, with the Pirates not only smashing a 20 year losing streak (thoughts to you, Roberto!) and sitting atop their Division, the PIRATES are being accused of harbouring some bandwagon fans! Oh happy day! The Pittsburgh Pirates having bandwagon fans! All of us who never dumped this team have waited to hear those wonderful words for 20 years!! Raise the Jolly Roger and welcome aboard!!
Tonight, as I watch the Steelers attempt to get their footing against the Bengals, I'll be switching to the Pirates/Padres game during commercials... Proud as anything that in the middle of September, Bucco baseball matters and my Steelers, no matter what, wont likely ever see a Pirate sized slump and I am....a fan FOR LIFE.
It's good to be a Pittsburgh sports fan.
