50 Sense; A Flock Of Seagulls Edition

Keeping with the tone for the year the Steelers remain stuck in the 80s. Matt Forte played the theme song "I Ran" on the Steelers in the first quarter as Clark whiffed and Willie Gay attempted to punch out the ball instead of tackle the runner. The Steelers valiant second half comeback after the Bears ran into Punter Zolton Mesko elicited texts of "great game" and "you almost came back" granting the Steelers a "moral victory" if not one on the scoreboard. And at the end of the day that is all that really matters. Wins on the scoreboard not "moral victories" which were a dime a dozen during the 80s. Heck, even arguably the greatest Steeler game of the 80s was the "moral victory" where the Steelers almost went to Denver and almost beat the Bronco’s to almost reach the AFCCG against the Browns. Some random 80’s thoughts on the Bear debacle;

  • · The Steelers should be renamed The Pittsburgh Baking Company as they produce more turnovers than anyone in Pittsburgh since Nabisco left East Liberty. Ben Roethlisberger was once again "Head Chef" leading the way with 4 turnovers leading to 23 Bear points. So the offense scored 46 points! 23 for us and 23 for them. That’s break even. Pop tarts all around!
  • · It seems the only time the Steelers defense gets off the field is when they give up points and get to go sit down. Yes they had a couple stops last night to help the Steelers get back in the game and gain a "moral victory" but when it really mattered they gave up 3rd down conversions like Big Chef gave up the football. The opening drive the Bears converted all the way down the field and finally had to call a time out because they were gassed from all the running they did, right by Steeler defenders. Then in the penultimate drive of the game the Steelers kept forcing 3rd and 10 or 12 only to see Cutler run for a first down over Golden like Bettis over Urlacher. Ike Taylor shut down Brandon Marshall the entire game except when it really mattered giving up a 41 yard pass play on 3rd and 10 later during that drive to put the Bears into FG range. Not settling for 3, Cutler of course tossed the winning score on 3rd and 5 over rookie Shmarko Thomas.
  • · By contrast the Steelers biggest 3rd down of the day was a dropped pass Roethlisberger to Wheaton. Another crucial 3rd down was dropped by Brown.
  • · Hard to criticize A Brown. About the only bad thing he did was drop that one 3rd down pass. The 9 catches for 196 yards and 2 TDs were epic. The one handed TD was as brilliant a catch as the one off his helmet in the playoff game against the Ravens a few years back. Since the Steelers will not sniff the playoffs this year (let alone a W) , that may be the biggest catch of the year for Brown. Kudos to A Brown yesterday for a tremendous effort.
  • · Ben and Cotchery both made crucial 3rd down conversions yesterday albeit in a loss. Roethlisberger was aided by Redman pushing the pile. Cotch was aided by Desastro pushing the pile.
  • · Pushing Cotch to a first down might be one of the few things Desastro did well. He did spring Dwyer on the run of the year but the big plays by the big #1 pick were few and far between. Too many times I saw Bears charge through the middle of the Steelers O line and torture Big Chef. One such bull rush led to the pick 6 where Ben hurried a throw that Cotchery made no effort on. On another Ben was thrown to the ground and injured his hand. On another he fumbled. The middle of the line is Velasco, Desastro and Foster. They were not up to par. As Coach Cliché would say "They were not good enough. They know it. They aren’t happy about it" It’s on the tape.
  • · Even worse were the Tackles. Both #2 draft picks seem to be wasted picks thus far in their career. Marcus "Raggedy Andy" Gilbert continues to be thrown around like a rag doll and was benched for a 7th round second year player in the second quarter. Mike Adams was man handled all night by Julius Peppers and gave up a sack fumble returned for 6 points.
  • · Kudos to Heath Miller who is in no way 100% after an ACL injury but gutted his way to several catches finding his way in the zone defense. Also David Johnson had perhaps his best day as a Steeler TE with several nice catches down the seam. Zolton Mesko shook off a roughing the punter and kicked well all night. Shaun Suisham made all 3 FGs and kept the ball away from dangerous return man Devin Hester all evening.
  • · The Steelers defense doesn’t swarm to the ball like in years past. That is how Forte ran for 60 yards. Once Clark whiffed there was no one else around to take him down. That also explains why when the other team fumbles they always recover. There are no Steelers swarming to recover the football.
  • · Who on the Steelers could start for the Bengals or Ravens? Certainly not any of the O linemen, RBs, TEs or WRs although A Brown made a case last night. Is Ben playing better than Flacco or Dalton? Polamalu and Ike Taylor would probably have jobs around the AFC North but certainly none of the D linemen. Not Gay or the aging Clark. Jones is a rookie although he could one day be a consistent player. Maybe Woodley or Timmons? But Woodley couldn’t get off against a rookie RT. Timmons is not making splash plays anymore either.
  • · The Steelers lack talent. The team of Tomlin Colbert have done a horrendous job of drafting over the last 5 years. I read a stat that of 42 draft picks only 11 remain with the Steelers. With Cowher’s players getting older, retiring or moving on this is simply unacceptable if the Steelers are to remain a viable winning franchise. Cowher and Colbert did a much better job as a team. Perhaps Cowher on top of being a great motivator was also a great talent evaluator? Perhaps we could entice him back to run the Steelers draft and scouting department? To put it in music terms Elton John wrote his best music with Bernie Taupin. What great songs has Elton written in the last 10 years after he and Taupin went their separate ways?
  • · Good thing Tomlin isn’t after style points. When you settle for mediocrity and 3-2 wins this is what you get. You can bet Bellicheat is after style points and any other points that Brady can put up on the scoreboard.
  • · Maybe by leaving the country the Steelers can get their elusive first win of 2013. Someone is leaving London with a "W" unless the Vikings and Steelers tie and are both left at 0-3-1 which would be fitting.
  • · The Steelers are 2-8 in their last 10 games. 2-12 if you count preseason. Tomlin seems to have lost the team and needs to do something…anything quickly to salvage some semblance of this season and save his reputation if not his job. I doubt the Steelers will get rid of him no matter his record but I was texted that Tomlin looks confused, even during the National Anthem! Well maybe not then…But I will say that I have watched the Steelers since 1972 and even during the 80s never saw 2-12. Even during the darkest days of 1988 in the days before Direct TV when I would wake up at 6 AM and drive to the closest Steeler bar hours away in Orange County to catch a seat close to the TV and watch the Steelers trudge to 5-11 they weren’t this inept and embarrassing. I will hang in there all season long and watch every play of every game. I am a Steeler fan. For life. But they need to seriously get it together in all facets including the scouting department and in drafting quality players. 2-12 don’t cut it. 11 for 42 don’t cut it. The free pastry doesn’t cut it. It cuts like a knife.
