Vikings sign ex-Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn to three-year contract

Rob Carr

All three of the reported Steelers cornerbacks targets have signed elsewhere, the last being Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn, who inked a 3-year, $15 million deal with the Vikings Thursday.

The Steelers reportedly had at least three possible targets in free agency for cornerbacks. The first two, Alterraun Verner (Bucs) and Nolan Carroll (Eagles) signed elsewhere.

Add Carolina's Captain Munnerlyn to that list.

Multiple sources are reporting Munnerlyn signed a 3-year, $15 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings Thursday, another piece to the rebuilding puzzle for the Vikings under new head coach Mike Zimmer.

2014 NFL Free Agency

Speaking of rebuilding...the Steelers helped the back end of their secondary with the addition of safety Mike Mitchell, but their rotation of three cornerbacks - Ike Taylor, William Gay and Cortez Allen - are all unsigned after 2015, with Taylor likely off the team this time next season.

While the team should be considered likely to draft at least one cornerback in a month, establishing another cornerback to compete for the third cornerback (with William Gay moving inside on passing downs) would be a smart move, unless they're able to find a cornerback in the draft who can play significant snaps - something no rookie Steelers cornerback has done since Bryant McFadden in 2005.
