Free agent RB James Starks to visit with the Steelers

Hannah Foslien

The former Packers running back will head to Pittsburgh to talk about a job backing up Le'Veon Bell for the Steelers.

Update: Tribune-Review reporter Alan Robinson wrote the visit will take place Tuesday. Tyler Dunne initially reported the meeting was Monday.

Original story:

Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal reported Saturday the Steelers will host ex-Packers running back James Starks Monday.

Starks fell behind rookie Eddie Lacy in Green Bay, but still had an impressive season as a role player. He rushed for 493 yards on 89 carries (5.5 yards per carry) and scored three touchdowns, as the Packers won the NFC North despite missing their quarterback for six games.

Pittsburgh has essentially no running back behind Le'Veon Bell - who set a franchise rookie record for total yards from scrimmage in 13 games last year. He rushed for 860 yards and added 399 receiving yards, looking to become the center point of the Steelers offense in 2014.

Every center point player needs a reliable back-up. Starks's career numbers are good as well. He has 1,427 yards on 322 carries since 2010.

The running back market is so cold, good players can be had for a relatively low price this late into free agency. The Steelers should have considered adding a running back a priority this offseason - Jonathan Dwyer signed with the Arizona Cardinals, and LaRod Stephens-Howling tore an ACL in the Steelers' Week 1 loss to Tennessee in 2013.
