A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed with Behind the Steel Curtain Wednesday the Steelers have strong interest in free agent cornerback Brandon Flowers, and a visit with team officials in the near future may be the next step.
The source said the team is trying to get Flowers out to Pittsburgh, but he is scheduled to meet with the Chargers first.
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora also reported the team's interest, and confirmed Flowers will be in San Diego over the next two days.
Free agent CB Brandon Flowers not negotiating w/teams yet. Will spend the next 2 days in SD. BAL, PIT, MIN among those monitoring closely— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) June 18, 2014
The Steelers began the offseason workout program after having passed on a cornerback in the first four rounds of the draft. They selected Arizona's Shaquille Richardson in the fifth round, and flirted a bit with some free agent cornerbacks. Their pursuit of the recently released Flowers raises some eyebrows, considering the expense Flowers may bring. At the same time, considering how late it is in the offseason - training camp starts in roughly six weeks - Flowers may not be in the best position to ask for a large salary.
BTSC had learned immediately following his release the team would watch the situation but were not expected to offer a contract in the immediate future. This is to say, simply, the team is interested in Flowers but at the right price.
