Vikings hire Mike Zimmer as head coach, AFC North picked clean

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Three of the four teams in the AFC North will have at least one new coordinator next season. The Steelers remained relatively unscathed from coaching turnover, giving them an opportunity to carry continuity into next season.

The Cincinnati Bengals will have something of a new approach to hammer out through the remainder of the offseason.

The Washington Redskins tabbed their offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden, as their next head coach, while the Vikings announced Mike Zimmer, the Bengals' defensive coordinator, as their newest head coach.

The Baltimore Ravens lost offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell to the head coaching position in Detroit and Cleveland fired its head coach, Rob Chudzinski.

The Steelers only fired their offensive line coach, Jack Bicknell Jr., so far this offseason, giving them the least amount of turnaround from 2013 into 2014 from a coaching perspective.

Cleveland offensive coordinator Norv Turner is rumored to be in the running for the Vikings' offensive coordinator position, and Ray Horton may join Ken Whisenhunt's staff in Tennessee as their defensive coordinator after one season in Cleveland in the same role.

It can be considered both good or bad for the Steelers. On the good side, they're hanging onto the vast majority of their coaching staff, establishing a positive level of continuity from a 2013 season that ended with three straight wins and victories in six of their last eight games. On the other, coaches getting promotions elsewhere is a sign of a healthy and thriving environment.

Cincinnati and Baltimore both have had a lot of success over the past few years, and Cleveland has a new ownership group in place, so the moves all seem more just the natural progression of things in the NFL. A full season of what the Steelers showed over the last half of the 2013 year may reverse things at this time next year.
