Free Agency

As everyone knows by now, the Steelers are in a bit of a pinch as far as salary cap is concerned and have been for several years now. It looks like there will be more restructuring and pushing money into future years which is never a good thing. Assuming we end up freeing up some money, who would you want the Steelers to sign this offseason? There are a fair amount of talented players, some of which might be helpful to us and within our price range.

I don't really include Jimmy Graham or TJ Ward or players like that. They're expected to be franchised or resigned by their own team and have very little chance of hitting the market.

There are 2 players I would like the Steelers to target if they don't address these positions through the draft. Scott Chandler, TE Buffalo. He's a pretty good pass catcher and is known as a great blocker. With the Bills expected to resign Byrd, there's a good chance he hits the open market and we could scoop him up. We have little quality depth behind Miller, and the signing of Chandler could mean the departure of Spaeth. Chandler has better pass catching abilities and will mean a larger dual threat with both Miller and him on the field. Or we could keep Spaeth and have 3 talented TEs with a possible rookie to learn behind them (Late round pick).

Probability: Low-Medium. He could increase the number of talented red-zone targets for us and add an extra blocker, which we usually need after our O-line gets hurt.

The other player I think we should target in free agency is Daryl Smith. Not only would he be an upgrade at ILB, we could let go of Foote so it wouldn't increase our cost, and we could weaken our rival. Smith was the main thing holding the Ravens D together this year, if he's gone they lose a major leader and we gain one in the position that is typically the "General" of the defense. Williams played well near the end of the year, and Spence has hope, but both players could get better learning behind Smith. The main reason for this signing though would be to weaken the D on our arch rival's team.

Both players shouldn't be too pricey in Free Agency and therefore would be realistically sign-able. Who do you think we should go after, keeping in mind our money problems?
