Source: Kirby Wilson will not get Ravens offensive coordinator position

USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Sun is reporting Steelers running backs coach will not get Baltimore's offensive coordinator position, a job he interviewed for a second time Friday.

Hopefully Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson got his expense check from the Baltimore Ravens already.

A source told the Baltimore Sun that Wilson, a candidate for the team's offensive coordinator position, will not get the job. The competition is ultimately between wide receivers coach Jim Hostler and former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Wilson had his second interview for the job Friday, and Sun writer Aaron Wilson quoted an optimistic Kirby Wilson.

"Yeah, it was excellent," Wilson told The Baltimore Sun on Saturday morning. "It went really well. It was very informative. They gave me a chance to present what I'm about and what I believe in and I heard what direction they want to go in and what they believe in. I was happy with the visit. I gave it my best shot."

Baltimore dipped into the offensive coordinator market when Jim Caldwell was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

The Ravens will hire their third offensive coordinator in the last 13 months. Caldwell replaced Cam Cameron, who was fired late in the 2012 season. Caldwell sparked a resurgence of Baltimore's offense, which it rode through the postseason to a Super Bowl XLVII championship.

If Wilson wasn't ever a legitimate candidate, he got valuable experience in the interviewing process. Perhaps it's a coach the Steelers will have to replace in the future. Wilson will certainly be on the radar of other coaches now with the outstanding development of multifaceted second-year running back Le'Veon Bell.

A young player taken in the second round who will be on the field for three downs and get 60 percent of the team's touches is tantalizing for any head coach, especially when that running back makes less than $1 million.
