Post Gazette reporter Ed Bouchette reported Saturday Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson, recently a candidate for Baltimore's offensive coordinator position, won't return to the Steelers. He will join the Minnesota Vikings under new head coach Mike Zimmer and offensive coordinator Norv Turner, presumably as the team's running backs coach.
Zimmer was just hired by the Vikings after previously serving as the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Whispers have surfaced Wilson's ouster may have had something to do with the current direction of the team. A source spoke to Behind The Steel Curtain indicating Wilson wasn't seen as the best option for the team moving forward.
Considering how well the offense performed over the second half of the season, it's hard to see a reason why Wilson would have been pushed out, as the source suggested, but considering the team gave permission for him to interview with a division rival, and as soon as he didn't get that job, he accepted one elsewhere at the same level he was in Pittsburgh lends weight to the idea some behind-the-scenes issues arose.
