James Saxon Hired as Running Backs Coach

Our new RB coach - USA TODAY Sports

Saxon has 22 years of NFL experience, rounding out what looks like a staff heavy on experience.

The concept of experience runs prominently through the Steelers coaching staff.

Along with four men who are or have been NFL head coaches, the Steelers added 22 more years of NFL experience when they hired running backs James Saxon Tuesday.

Oddly, Saxon comes from Minnesota, the same franchise former Steelers running back coach Kirby Wilson now works.

Saxon coached Adrian Peterson to the best season of a sure fire Hall of Fame career. In 2012, Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns along with being named the Most Valuable Player in the NFL.

He departed with Leslie Frazier and the remainder of his staff when he was fired after an underwhelming 2013 season. Peterson rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns against the Steelers in their Week 4 win this season.

Wilson was let out of his contract Saturday at roughly the same time news came out he was no longer a candidate for Baltimore's offensive coordinator position. He worked for Mike Tomlin (the former Vikings defensive coordinator) since he began his tenure with the team in 2007.
