The Steelers are currently slotted in the #15 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, which is the highest they have Drafted since taking Ben Roethlisberger #11 overall 10 years ago in 2004. As of right now, they are currently a pick short of their original 7 after trading their 3rd Round Pick to get Shamarko Thomas. However, they ARE most likely to get a 3rd Comp pick for Mike Wallace and a 4th-5th for Keenan Lewis for leaving in FA to the Dolphins and Saints respectively. Even so, when you look at the prospects on paper, this is a Top-Heavy Draft that drops off at right around where the Steelers pick, then gets EXTREMELY deep around the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Rounds.
As for me personally, the only prospect (that would likely be available to us) I would select at #15 would be LB C.J. Mosely out of Alabama if he manages to fall past Buffalo at #9 and New York at #12. Anyone else would be a reach (even Eric Ebron and RaShede Hageman). THIS is the year that you want as many 2nd-3rd round picks as you can get. I would advise Colbert and Tomlin to trade down in the first (assuming Mosely isn't there), get a 2nd or 3rd Rounder, and STILL be able to Draft someone in the first that could fill a need.
Also, Mel Kiper and every other Draft "expert" out there who is predicting we will take Louis Nix at 15 can suck it because they obviously forgot that we just gave Steve McClendon a 3 year-extension last offseason and he has turned into a starting quality NT. Sorry, but the Steelers aren't that stupid. Why would you take a guy that is only going to be a 2 down player in a league where Run-Stopping, Space-eating NTs are now a protected species? Especially as high as #15 overall in the NFL Draft? Casey Hampton was only taken 19th overall in the 2001 NFL Draft. And I also have to laugh at one of these experts who said the Steelers have a "history" in taking DL high. Cam Heyward and Ziggy Hood are the only DLs we have taken in the 1st-3rd Rounds since Casey Hampton.
