Biggest Draft Need for the Steelers

The biggest draft need in my eyes is glaringly obvious, we need more picks! I have gone over this draft a lot since the recent lack of a playoff birth for the steelers and no matter how I twist this draft I can't make myself happy. My list of needs based on current roster and listed in priority is...CB, NT, FS, WR, OLB, TE, DE, ILB and change of pace RB. We need a freakin punter too but who drafts punters. These needs can be flipped around due to individual likes and dislikes but I feel these are positions that need to be addressed immediately. It would also be hugely beneficial to find a return man so AB can concentrate on receiving. So with those needs listed above that makes 9. Not to mention the fact that we could probably double dip on WR and CB based on need of cornerback and the depth of both positions.

Free agency is an option. We can be frugal and smart and fill a couple of positions with vets who fit our system. Theres a problem with that and I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone that the lack of cap space will be an issue with filling many holes on our roster. In addition we have our own FAs that could be signed and a few key players entering their last years of rookie contracts.

The only option I think the Steelers have is to trade back. Maybe even trade back twice. Definitely in the first round though. There are a ton of solid options throughout the first round for us. Why not take advantage of this and trade back and add a pick or hopefully two. Id like to see us trade back in the second too. This draft has been noted by Colbert and several other draft experts to be extremely deep and I see it too. The problem though is that with a deep draft last year and a deeper draft this year, eventually we will hit a down year. We need to reload this year. Imagine the mock draft you could do with say a late 1, a late 2, three 3s, two 4s, two 5s, a 6 and two 7s. With a year so loaded in talent lets take advantage and build the depth we've been so sorely lacking.
