NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport tweeted Thursday veteran free agent defensive lineman Alex Carrington has a visit scheduled with the Steelers Thursday night.
Carrington, 26, is 6-foot-5, 301 pounds and is scheme-versatile. Whether the Steelers see him as a starting-level player remains to be seen.
He was playing at a high level in 2012, by all accounts, and poised to have a big contract year in 2013, but an injury during the Bills' Week 3 game put him out the remainder of the season. He's seen as an interior defensive pass rusher, but his size would be beneficial as a 5-technique defensive end in Pittsburgh.
Incidentally, Carrington was a college teammate of former Steelers TE David Johnson at Arkansas State. Johnson was taken by Pittsburgh in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, and Carrington went in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft to Buffalo.
