If I were to choose right now who the Steelers were going to select with the 15th pick this year, I would say Dennard from Michigan St. Tomlin visited his pro day......Tomlin was at Bell's pro day last year at Mich. St.....the Steelers needed a running back last year......the Steelers need a secondary player this year.....it all fits. But something made me wonder if Dennard is in fact the guy Pittsburgh really wants to take with the first round pick. Most of us all believe in taking the "best player available" over the "best need available," but I thought Ike Taylor staying with the Steelers kind of complicated the process of who Pittsburgh really needs in the first round this year.
I want to say that I love Ike Taylor. I am glad that he stayed. I am a nostalgic person, and I love when long time players like Taylor stay and retire as a Steelers. However, would Pittsburgh still pay Ike Taylor $2.5 million to be a second string/depth CB if they indeed intend to draft Dennard in the first round?
The more I think about it, the more I am thinking the Steelers may be leaning towards taking either a wide receiver or a safety with the first round. And with Mike Mitchell signing a five year deal at free safety, he's obviously the free safety for the future. I am guessing they would lean more towards strong safety. However, Polamalu is still going to be here for another two years.
Bottom line question here is.....is our first round pick going to be a day one starter? For our sake, I hope he is.
