Steelers will host ex-Saints WR Lance Moore Tuesday

Along with James Starks coming to down, the Steelers are digging into offensive players in free agency after targeting defensive players early.

CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora Tweeted the Steelers will bring in free agent wide receiver Lance Moore Tuesday, indicating the team is at least looking beyond Jerricho Cotchery, in the event the veteran receiver isn't re-signed.

Moore's numbers fell off quite a bit from 2012 to 2013, having only 37 catches for 457 yards and two touchdowns last season. He had a career-high 1,041 yards in 2012. Moore has been with the Saints since 2006, after spending the 2005 season on Cleveland's practice squad.

Moore was a teammate of Steelers back-up quarterback Bruce Gradkowski at Toledo, and is from Columbus, Ohio, like Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell.

How serious would the Steelers be in Moore? The team needs a solid receiver if Jerricho Cotchery isn't coming back. He has a meeting with the Carolina Panthers scheduled for Monday.

The Steelers have eight career receptions behind Antonio Brown among their current wide receivers. While it's fair to expect a 100 percent healthy Heath Miller to make up 70 catches or more (he had 71 in 2012 before tearing his ACL in Week 16), the Steelers will need a veteran presence in the slot to help move Antonio Brown around the formation depending on match-up advantages and to help second-year WR Markus Wheaton become fully acclimated with a starting position. Wheaton is expected to replace ex-Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders.
