Updated Salary Cap and Depth Chart - Steelers have $3.5M left in cap space

As the rush of free agency is ending the Steelers look to have around $3.7 million in cap space available to spend. With the June 1st cut of Woodley they do not need to save money for their draft class but still seem to have some holes to fill across the roster and they will be looking for bargains in free agency from what is left.

With 66 players under contract the depth chart right now does not make good reading in places and free agency has created issues at some positions and solved some at others:

QB RB FB WR1 WR2 TE LT LG C RG RT
1. Ben Roethlisberger 1. Le'Veon Bell 1. Will Johnson 1. Antonio Brown 1. Markus Wheaton 1. Heath Miller 1. Kelvin Beachum 1. Ramon Foster 1. Maurkice Pouncey 1. David DeCastro 1. Marcus Gilbert
2. Bruce Gradkowski 2. Alvester Alexander 2. Lance Moore 2. Derek Moye 2. Matt Spaeth 2. Guy Whimper 2. David Snow 2. Cody Wallace 2. Nik Embernate 2. Mike Adams
3. Landry Jones 3. Tauren Poole 3. Justin Brown 3. Lanear Sampson 3. David Paulson 3. Bryant Browning
4. Miguel Maysonet 4. Kashif Moore 4. Danny Coale 4. Michael Palmer 4. Chris Hubbard

1. Cameron Heyward 1. Steve McLendon 1. Lawrence Timmons 1. Jason Worilds 1. Ike Taylor 1. Mike Mitchell 1. Troy Polamalu 1. Shaun Suisham 1. Brad Wing 1. Greg Warren
2. Brian Arnfelt 2. Cam Thomas 2. Vince Williams 2. Jarvis Jones 2. Cortez Allen 2. Will Allen 2. Shamarko Thomas 2. Bryce Davis
3. Nick Williams 3. Hebron Fangupo 3. Terence Garvin 3. Chris Carter 3. William Gay 3. Robert Golden 3. Jordan Dangerfield

4. Al Lapuaho 4. Kion Wilson 4. Vic So'oto 4. Isaiah Green
5. Sean Spence 5. Daniel Molls 5. Ross Ventrone
6. Antwon Blake
7. Devin Smith

Most likely the Steelers are still looking to fill the following via free agency:

1) At least 1 RB - Stephens-Howling should be around the vet minimum again after his injury, Felix Jones surely would cost the veteran minimum again or a new FA from what is left out there such as Michael Bush or LeGarrette Blount?

2) At least 1 DL - Keisel might accept league minimum which comes with a veterans discount or a new FA such as Alex Carrington?

So a chunk of that $3.5 million is earmarked for a few positions. What is left cash wise could go to a FA CB or LB as long as the contract is around the league minimum or saved to extend the contracts of some key players heading to free agency in 2015 such as Cam Heyward or Cortez Allen.

If they could fill out some of the backup roles with players accepting qualifying contracts for the veteran minimum eligible for the veteran discount they could save a fair bit of money. Their salaries would be around $635,000 each for cap purposes and with the rule of 51 displacement would actually only add $215,000 to the current cap each. This is the deal Will Allen just accepted as well as Greg Warren and Guy Whimper.

Personally I am hoping some cash can be found for Pat Angerer. A tackling machine when healthy.

Still the option to get a quick $4 million from restructuring Timmons contract if they need fast money and further savings could be had by sorting a long term deal for Worilds or Roethlisberger (or even a restructure in his case) that could provide combined around another $10 million.

The salary cap figures above are from a combination of rotoworld, OverTheCap and Spotrac. The adjustment for 51 is the salaries of the 15 players over the 51 players on the list that are counted against the cap, taken off the total. This is 15 salaries of $420,000 each. The roll over from the 2013 salary cap is salary cap money the Steelers had left over at the end of the 2013 season that can be brought forward into 2014 and added to this years salary cap.

Edit: Updated to include signing of Michael Palmer. Waiting on contract details for Lance Moore.
