Report: Steelers won't release Troy Polamalu

Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports

Team is $15 million over the salary cap, meaning lots of moves, including either an extension or a paycut for Polamalu, are on the horizon.

ESPN reported Wednesday morning Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will not be released, and efforts are underway to either sign him to an extension, or get him to agree to a paycut.

Adam Schefter initially reported it, with Scott Brown contributing.

After Jason Worilds accepted the transition tag he was given Monday, the Steelers are approximately $15 million over the salary cap. They are required to be within cap compliance by the start of the league year, 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, March 11. Polamalu is considered a prime candidate for some kind of re-worked deal. With a $10.88 million cap number and an $8.25 million roster salary, the option of releasing him has been on the table.

According to ESPN, though, there is some thought behind the Steelers simply being loyal, and choosing not to part with one of the best players in franchise history. At the same time, the Steelers don't appear to have the depth at either safety position to lose another starter from 2013. Ryan Clark, the team's starting free safety since 2008, is a free agent and is not expected to return.

Similar conversations are allegedly underway right now with tight end Heath Miller, another franchise favorite, who had a $6 million base salary for the 2014 season, which was reportedly reduced.
