It's the perfect ending for an odd career.
Teams told Cardinals UFA RB Rashard Mendenhall is, in fact, retiring, per sources. Mendenhall hinted at in a Feb. 25 Huffington Post column.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 9, 2014
Mendenhall was a productive running back in 2011 before his knee gave out along the sideline after a run in Week 17. The Steelers rode Isaac Redman to 130 yards in a playoff loss the following week to Denver, but Mendenhall was never the same.
After an up-and-down 2012 season in which Mendenhall was never fully healthy, the Steelers allowed Mendenhall to walk, the first time they'd let a first-round pick play through his rookie contract and sign elsewhere since Plaxico Burress left for the Giants in 2005.
Even Burress came back. Mendenhall, it seems, will not.
