Is The Key To The Steelers Getting Back To The Playoffs Really About the Offenses Success?

The Steelers offense certainly turned the corner last year and did something they havent done in quite a while. They scored at least 20 points in the last 9 games of the season. It was very impressive and the offense was very good and effective during the 2nd half of the year, but is the success of the offense going to be enough to get them into the playoffs? I stumbled across some interesting information today. In Mike Tomlins 7 seasons as a head coach, the Steelers have never made the playoffs when the defense gives up over 300 points. Check this out

2007- 269 Yes

2008- 223 Yes

2009-324 No

2010-232 Yes

2011-227 Yes

2012-314 No

2013-370 No

This may just be coincidental because had Ryan Succop hit a 41 yard field goal, or if the officials could see a penalty that was right in front of them, this trend would be broken, but it is interesting to say the least. Just seems to be a strange correlation to me. So what do you think? Will it be possible to give up over 300 points in a season and have the Steelers make the playoffs or will the defense have to get back to their old ways? Let me know what you think
