In a recent column on the "Steel Mill" , columnist Alan Robinson points out how of the Steelers 30 allowed pre-draft visits , they have dedicated most to CB's . With the recent surge of Bradley Roby from Ohio State up the draft boards , will this prompt the Steelers to do what they haven't done before (draft a CB with their first round pick)? Of the top four cornerbacks in this draft , three have actually visited with the Steelers (Dennard, Roby and Verrett) while all have been scouted , whether it be a pro day , combine or workout . In total the Steelers have visited with a total of 6 cornerbacks , second only to the linebackers , who have 7 . Add in the safety position and you have a total of 8 defensive backs visited .
Now , other than Mel Kiper, many over at NFL Network including Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis have Roby rated behind Gilbert and definitely in the top 3 of the cornerbacks available in this draft.Previously , most had Gilbert and Dennard as 1-2 in the rankings , but recently, the rankings have become clouded and also very random with the order being Gilbert-Roby - Dennard- Verrett or a combination of the top three switching places . Jeremiah has gone as far as mocking Roby as the Steelers pick at #15. Would the Steelers go this route in making their selection in the first round? If just looking at the number of visits dedicated to the position , you might come to the conclusion that they will .
Of course, the Steelers could be bringing in a bunch of these guys to look at the depth in the position as the draft is very deep at both CB and WR this year. Some could be here for later round drafting or to evaluate any of these factors -character, system fit , physical appearance etc; . Whomever the Steelers pick in the first round with their pick will have both praise and condemnation from all the different sections of fans in Steeler Nation.
