Welcome Aboard, Darrius Heyward-Bey..For Now

Now, I can be the first to admit that I was not exactly for the Pittsburgh Steelers signing the former overall #7 NFL draft pick of 2009, and unproven wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey. In fact, I can honestly say that I saw absolutely no reason for the mere visit to take place, let alone a contract offer and signing. But as we all know, myself and the rest of us as fans do not make those decisions.

Enter the Steelers organization, and those who seemed convinced that Heyward-Bey would make a good addition to the "Black-N-Gold" roster, at least for one season. Those individuals are the people that I trust 100%..through thick & thin..good or bad..sickness and in health, I have always put my faith of the organization in their hands.

Heyward-Bey, a wide receiver that I can forgive for his first four(4) seasons in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. Because let's face it, what quarterback did he really have to get used to? He had to deal with the likes of..JaMarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowski(now with the Steelers),Charlie Frye, Jason Campbell, Kyle Boller, Terrelle Pryor and last, but not least Carson Palmer. Now, I ask of you..is it fair that he be judged during that debacle in Oakland?

On to the Indianapolis Colts, where after signing a similar one year contract, Heyward-Bey had a positive beginning, which lead to his imminent benching and downfall. This time under only one quarterback, well proven winner, and accuracy ball flinger, Andrew Luck. So then what is wrong with this picture?

If Heyward-Bey fails in the unstable organization like the Raiders, but yet continues to fail in the system and stability of the Colts..what makes us as Steelers fans think that his stint in The Burgh will be any better? I myself can only think of one reason, "BIG" Ben Roethliberger..and here is why.

How many receivers became Super Stars in Pittsburgh, then went off to enjoy lesser careers elsewhere? I can tell you, in recent years.."ALL OF THEM"! Minus Plaxico Burress, who left and won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2008. But big names that have won with the Steelers like Santonio Holmes and Mike Wallace have yet to amount to anything. The reason behind their success in Pittsburgh has been on factor, and one factor only..Ben Roethlisberger.

Not saying that, Darrius Heyward-Bey will become a receiving Super Star with #7 at the helm, just saying he has a better chance of becoming.."BETTER"! Because he will have better talent around him, to incorporate his speed and seemingly lack of hands into a system that knows how to use each & every player that caters to their skill set.

So to that I say, "Welcome Aboard, Darrius Heyward-Bey". You may not have been any of our first choice, but you were the choice that the Pittsburgh Steelers have made. And us as "TRUE" fans stand by that..as we always do.
