50 Sense; Post Draft Edition

This is just one man's view from his couch in the Cali compound. Add your thoughts and Here We Go Steelers!

  • Looking at 50s board before the draft I liked C.J. Mosely at #1, Tuitt or Hageman at #2 and Gaines at #3. If Bryant was there at #4 I was definitely on board with that pick. I had Archer in my sights but at #5 and I really liked Carruthers as a later pick. When all is said and done I like what I have read about Shazier who seems like a faster, more versatile and less injury prone Mosely. We nailed Tuitt, Archer & Bryant. McCullers appears to be the Carruthers type player I was hoping for. We really need Shaq to be an NFL CB as that was our biggest need after defensive line.
  • As much as we needed one, I completely understand not drafting a CB early. With the #15 pick, Dennard would have been a reach. Sort of a Deon Figures or Chad Scott. Dennard is a functional CB but not worthy of the 15th pick. As we moved through the rounds in the draft the FO always seemed to have a better player available to them than a CB that was still on the board.
  • As a Lakers season ticket holder back to the Showtime days, one of my favorite Lakers players of all time (after Magic Johnson) was Shaquille O'Neal. Shaqqie was good for 3 Parades down Figueroa...Now I get to root for another Shaquille to lead a parade for one of my favorite teams. Give the guy #34..."Can You Dig It?!"
  • Archer at #3 was a head scratch. Kind of like Landry Jones at #4 last year. That said I think we will get way more out of Archer than we ever will out of Landry Jones.
  • I sure would have liked to have our 3rd round pick this year that we traded for "Archer-sized" Shamarko Thomas. Especially after signing Mitchell and resigning Allen. I know the Shark is loved at BTSC and I have nothing against him as he hasn't really been given an opportunity yet. Sure hope the Shark has something for us and gets on the field and makes plays in 2014 and beyond. Then losing out on Gaines and Desir won't hurt so much.
  • Archer should be our punt and kick returner allowing Antonio Brown to save his body from the wear and tear. We have been very lucky that Brown hasn't been slowed or injured by the perilous punt return duty. That said, it is nice to know if the Steelers are penned up deep in their own end or if they need a big return come playoff time that Brown can be a secret weapon.
  • I really like the pick of Martavis Bryant. Lots of upside. But I sure hope he isn't the second coming of Limas Sweed. Of course if you are going to waste a draft pick better it be a 4th rather than a 2nd. Landry Jones anyone?
  • Competition at camp for positions is always an awesome thing. It make sure you get a good and solid 53 in uniform. The Steelers did a good job signing free agents to make sure that they could draft BPA and be solid at all positions heading to Latrobe.
  • Should be an interesting battle at WR for roster spots. Got to figure A Brown, Moore, Wheaton and Bryant are locks. That leaves Moye, Bey and J Brown battling for one spot.
  • One of my favorite Steeler 3-4 DEs of all time after Lombardi hoisting Aaron Jones and The Beard was Ray Seals. His girth and size was dominating for a couple years in the trenches in the Burgh. I just didn't like his video before XXX. After getting hammered against the run last year, could we be moving back in that direction?
  • 6th round pick Dan McCullers out of TN is nicknamed "Shade Tree" Here's hoping he develops into another Ngata by 2015.
  • Like WR it should be an interesting camp battle on the defensive line. McClendon, Heyward, Thomas and Tuitt appear to be locks. Arnstadt, Nick WIlliams, Fangupu and McCullers are in a battle for 2 or 3 positions.
  • A front 3 of Cam Thomas at NT with Heyward and Tuitt at ends would be HUGE. Shades of Ray Seals? These guys could eat up space and blockers and create opportunities for Shazier, Timmons and the LBs.
  • Jarvis Jones looked slow last year in preseason. Jarvis Jones looked slow last year during the season. Lots of the BTSC faithful explained it away as he was learning the complicated LeBeau defense. Let's hope he has learned it and turns the corner in 2014. We desperately need that #1 from last year to pan out and not flame out.
  • LB should generate a good camp battle as well. While Worilds, Jones, Timmons, Vince Williams, Shazier & Moates are locks, Chris Carter, Garvin, Spence, Kion WIlson and Zumwalt are in a battle for 2 or 3 roster spots.
  • Was in Pittsburgh for the phenomenal Springsteen/E Street show in April but waited on the Steeler gear to see who they drafted. Headed back to the Burgh for the Joe Grushecky/Bruce Springsteen show at Soldiers & Sailors May 22 and May 23. Can't wait to get an Aiello's hoagie, an O Dog and some new Steelers gear down in the Strip District...Rock On!
  • I can almost smell the fresh cut grass in Latrobe! Only 3 months until the first exhibition game versus the G Men. Here We Go!
