I was reading the SI article by Jenny Vrentas about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers season opener when I noticed it mentioned Lance Moore. Turns out his brother is playing for Winnipeg. The article is a pretty decent piece as well.
Other Steelers related aspects to the game last night: Some guy named Thaddeous Gibson was playing DE for the Toronto Argonauts. I noticed him for one tackle and two offsides penalties. I suspect lining up 1 yard off the ball is more than a bit disconcerting for someone who is used to the US game.
Penalties were pretty key in the game though they were seldom mentioned by the broadcasters. Players from the US usually take a few games to understand and fully process the rule differences and Toronto seems to have a lot of first year players.
One ex-Steelers who still hasn't surfaced is Terry Hawthorne who hasn't been in a game day jersey since he was signed (pre-season or the opener) and who is no longer listed on the roster.
For those who didn't read the article, the Bombers won handily (a huge shock for us locals) and Drew Willy (our starter) reminds me of Tommy Clements in his prime. He was rested late in the third (after throwing for over 305 yards) and replaced by Brian Brohm.
The rookie 3rd string QB, Robert Marve, scored on a one yard goal line plunge. Marve looks like he has a tonne of potential. I will be surprised if he isn't a starting QB somewhere within the next two seasons.
